It shouldnt matter if he hit the deck and rolled over 50 times holding his head. He was brought down in the box and thats a pen

Alan Shearer has this infuriating phrase that he uses on MOTD: the player felt contact and “has the RIGHT to go down.” But in the PL that one is given all day long.
I think as others have said the theatrics that went with the foul didn’t help Collins, and from the east terrace it did look as if he was playing for it, but that was a stonewall penalty as is ever seen. There was contact and the player…….

There is no way in the world that wasn’t a penalty.
Look at JJOTs reaction first of all. When the ref blew the whistle he thought he had given it away. He knew he had been done by Collins. The other Mansfield player went to protest his innocence before realising the ref had given the free kick to them.
What annoys me more is the ref was so far behind play and gave the decision as a dive. He was level with me in box 8 when he blew that whistle and yet the Lino who is 10-15 yards away with a clear line of sight doesn’t have the minerals to flag for it.

I think Nicholson bundled to the ground from a throw in,is another if not stronger pen claim. Yeah, couldn’t believe there was nothing given for that. Looked like he was getting goal side and was literally wrestled to the ground. Will check properly on the full highlights tomorrow though. Was right in front of where I stand. Defender wrestled Nicholson off his feet, and deposited him on the ground. Linesman was only yards away, but just shook his head. I`d like to hear his interpretation of the event.

As clear as can be. Sure the reaction doesn't help at this lower level, the refs think they are better than they are and don't get the basics correct often.

I was stood on the North Terrace almost directly in line with both Nicholson being thrown to the ground from the throw in and JJoT tripping Collins and both of them for me were clear penalties. It doesn't matter if a player makes the most of it, both of them were fouls. And both directly in front of the same linesman who didn't seem to know which way to raise his flag for a throw in half the time until the referee pointed so I am not surprised he didn't have a big enough pair to flag for those decisions.
And this isn't me with blue tinted glasses on as if either were given against us, I would have had no complaints.

I was east terrace but still looked like a pen all day long.
Again the Nicholson incident, it’s absolutely bizzare.
The only way you wouldn’t give them is if for some reason, you didn’t want to give them. Maybe because you don’t like the manager and are happy to throw the players, fans and employees of the club under the bus to have your little moment in the sun.
Don’t forget, that official got paid to make that decision. We indirectly pay his wages.
Typically as well, as they always do, the EFL highlights omitted this. They close ranks and don’t let refs blunders which cost teams points and potentially promotion and relegation to see the light of air.
Have a feeling that ref just decided rovers weren’t getting any penalties out of him, I’d say appeal them yellow for diving but we all know again, they close ranks and you’d need a confession from JJOT to actually get some justice.
I used to be against VAR but the more this happens, the more I want it. I dont watch much premiership….I presume VAR could have got this awarded?
Too much at this level is decided by cheating and relying on officials to not notice.
JB little antics with the ball in first half also contributed. Sadly I really think refs do let that decide things for them, rather than do the job they are paid to do.

Perhaps the way Collins threw himself to the ground didn't help matters, as it made it look like he was trying to win a penalty rather than him being fouled. Perhaps if he'd just fallen down normally the ref wouldn't have thought he dived. Yep, it was the theatricals that followed the contact that robbed us of a penalty. Collins overegged the pudding when he went down quite so spectacularly. Yep, he was playing for contact and a penalty but that's been part of the game for donkeys years and the theatrical side is just a habit picked up in the 60s from Continental and South American players and has slowly blossomed over the years to become part of the game here as well.

Makes sense; a lot of our own fans don't like him so you can imagine some refs cant stand him. Would they be professional?..id like to think so but..
