Brilliant, what a fantastic season and achievement, I hope they inspire many more girls to both play and attend matches at The Mem. 👏👏 #HerGameToo Well done to the gas girls but I’m going to have to pull you up on that cringe hash tag I’m afraid.

Weird you couldn't just ignore it. Your response is more "cringe".

Congratulations! I got my 8 year old one of their shirts for Christmas and I've finally signed her up to a football academy which she has been desperate to do. Am I right in thinking the Gas Girls were walking the league during their first season only for the whole thing to be cancelled due to Covid? So is this their first promotion? They were promoted up as champions from the Gloucestershire County Women's Football League last season. This latest success is in the South West Regional Women's Football League Northern Division. Next season they will compete in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division (5th level of pyramid). The jump from the GCWFL to the SW North is not a big one - teams often go up at the first attempt. The next division is a bigger step up, but the pulling power of the Rovers name goes a long way in the region.

If anyone's daughter, niece, granddaughter etc is inspired to try football by Rovers' success or by the Her Game Too campaign, I'm setting up a girls' section at Warmley Rangers FC, based in Oldland Common. Message me for details.

By all means pull me up, but it is in recognition and solidarity with a group set up to make girls and women feel comfortable at football games, and it’s working. To see young girls at The Mem enjoying themselves in what is becoming a more inclusive crowd makes me so happy I become emotional, because I never thought the day would come.

I’m nearly 40 and I don’t recall a policy of excluding women from football. My sister and I used to go with my dad in the 80s. Most women I’ve known had zero interest in football rather than being prevented from joining in. Perhaps further back things were different.

You are of course correct that women have never been excluded and I am glad your sister went without issue. However , my experience over the last few decades is although not being excluded it was a dreaded place to go, it’s hard to explain but it’s the same for minority groups in my opinion…… some cope, others feel very isolated, vulnerable, even fearful , there is an air of thinking you’re going to be subject to abuse or ridicule at any time and you sometimes wish you could block your ears. Anyway, I’m gabbling on, I’m glad you feel it is/was ok, but just thought I’d let you know for many, many others it felt unwelcoming and not inclusive much of the time and I hope young people now don’t have to go through it.

Wow, I never knew Bristol Rovers fans were such a bunch of racists and sexists. Glad times are better and everyone can go to football matches without fear or ridicule. Some of the older fans are on here, I wonder what made them chose a path away from bigotry towards the enlightenment of today?

No its not acceptable for you to be pulled up why should you have to accept it?. Anything that makes women, girls or any group feel more comfortable at games should be encouraged. That is not to say that Bristol Rovers fans or Football fans in general are misogynistic, racist or in any way bigoted, but we have all come across those types and maybe we have found ourselves with such people and overlooked it because they are our mates. You can hashtag HGT as much as you want and you'll always get a like from me.

With respect, ridiculing me and posting sarcastically won’t mean it never happened. And no, Bristol Rovers fans on the whole are not racist or sexist or for that matter homophobic, but believe me we have a few who are, it is getting better thankfully but if you open your eyes you’ll still see it rearing it’s ugly head now and again.

It's rearing its bloody head in this very thread, in the usual veiled "What? Me?" way.

Bit disappointed this thread has gone off on a different course. Regarding #hergametoo this was set up for women who went to football or took an interest in football but generally got the 'What do you know" "You're only looking at the players" type of comments. I think some should look at what the # is about before making comments.

Will they go into a higher league now? Yes, they should go in to the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division. How many levels is that from the WSL ? It would be great if we could be better than the 82ers in something other than.. Not being cheating bastards. Not being arsonists Having less fingers on each hand than them. Not dragging our knuckles on the floor when we walk. Not turning our backs on our club in its hardest time. I’m not sure our men’s team will be higher than them again in my lifetime.

How far can we go with the current set up before we hit the glass ceiling and need a sizeable investment?

Almost, they were allowed to join at tier 7 rather than 9, by vote of the other GCWFL clubs. To be fair they were happy with that, they had zero players when they applied and didn't know how popular the trials would be. WSL will be a stretch, there's an element of franchising, you have to have certain facilities and finances. Below that there's the likes of Tottenham and Southampton, high standard

Yes, the Gas Girls if they do well in next 2 years will be up with the likes of Keynsham and Bridgwater (who just played Man U in the Womens FA cup). It gets tougher at that level but those teams are only 1 league off the Championship where Bristol City Reside so 3 years from now who knows who they can be playing. Some good people at the Top who do everything Voluntarily at the moment, but would be good to see them rise.

I heard both racist and sexist remarks last night against Sutton. "It's a man's game referee!" may seem like an innocent enough comment, but not when I'm with two impressionable girls who both play football. It would be easy for them to feel marginalised and like they don't belong in such an environment. Some guy thought it appropriate to shout "Get back to your own country" at one of the Sutton players - I assume he knew the player wasn't English? It's not the first time I've heard stuff said just because of the colour of a player's skin. I find it interesting that the racial diversity on the pitch is in no way reflected in the crowd. The crowd is predominantly white male partly because comments like the above make it easy to feel marginalised.
