Now that Egan and Greenslade have been offered contracts, does anyone know if the others in the youth team are being released or have another year.
I believe Max Edwards and Lainglais have another year but what about the others that made the squad in the EFL Trophy and FA cup?

Would love to see as many as possible of our youngsters come through, hope JB is a fan of developing youngsters, the ' billy ' loan has been a huge eye opener for me , can't believe he is only 19, so far ahead of most lads physically and strength wise.

Agree with all that halifax. I hope you’re right but I think JB may be aiming higher in terms of quality. Elliot A was exceptional, and we played the style to fit him exactly. He will be playing with such confidence that he must have a chance of remaining at NUFC and getting a squad place. Unlikely to get such a good loan again and it will be a tad unfair to compare our next loan with him. Although of course we will! 😉 UTG!

Regrettably the last proper look we had at our prospects was the Pizza Trophy Chelsea home game, where every single one of them looked a million miles out of their depth. Then the Exeter away game happened, 5-0 down at half time.

Interested to see how Max Edwards-Stryjewski develops over next couple of years. He became the 2nd youngest ever Rovers player when he made an appearance in the FA Cup vs Peterborough.

Think Max has 2 years as he only signed his Academy Scholarship a few days ago.

I seem to remember Joey saying in an interview that he didn’t have a clue what was going on i our development squad due to the pressures of managing the first team.
The whole development squad was someone else’s domain and he obviously just gets the odd recommendation. In some ways this is understandable and has proved successful but it’ll shine a light on the quality of coaching and recruitment at that level of the club

It does make you wonder whether it’s worth bothering with the expense at a club with our resources. If you can’t employ the best coaches then it’s surely a waste of money.
The few really decent youngsters we’ve produced have left before they’ve had a run in the team anyway. I doubt the fees received even cover the cost of running the set up.
Joey has obviously achieved success picking up other clubs over production and that is probably the most financially sensible route.

Brentford saved £1.5m by shutting their academy and focusing on the B team model and recruiting players in the 17 to 20 bracket who had been released by other clubs, the overseas market (more difficult now with brexit) or promising lads coming up through non-league. They had some promising players on their books when they shut the academy, players that went on to represent their country at various levels like Dermi Lusala (Went to Tottenham), Levi Laing (went to Arsenal, now West Ham), Josh Bohui (went to Man Utd), Xavier Simons (now Chelsea), Luke Mbete (now Man City), Ian Poveda (went to Man City, now Leeds) and Tyrick Mitchell (Crystal Palace/full England int.). Brentford revealed they had received only £30,000 in compensation for Poveda, as he had been too young to sign pro forms and this was all that the EPPP stipulated they receive.

Seems to make perfect sense to me. It would be different if the clubs got grants for the childcare work they do from under 10’s onwards. The community and youth work the club does is fantastic and has been for years but in the cold light of business maybe the youth football is a step too far. The analogy I would use from horse racing shows that the successful trainers don’t run huge breeding and pre training operations as well, they focus on what they’re good at. The huge operations like Godophin do but we can leave that to the monied few

Some good names on that Brentford list, notably Tyrick of course. Problem for me is you see us producing the likes of Kyrie Pierre and watching them get snapped up for the PL vultures before they can buy a lottery ticket. Idk how much our academy costs to run on an annual basis and maybe the £200k Pierre fee goes a long way towards paying for that but surely we make a loss? We rarely make profits on those making the first team either in the long term - Lockyer, Bloom, Ollie Clarke all left for free. Perhaps we'll get a decent fee for Luca Hoole if he establishes himself in L1 after a solid first season. In terms of our current crop, good news for Greenslade and Egan. I'm interested to see what we do with Sam Heal and Ryan Jones this year given LB has been arguably our least nailed position (Clarke, Anderton, Grant, Finley etc.).

Be good to have few of the young players develop and get a chance.
Love what the club are doing.

All the other second year scholars were released 4 weeks ago (8 of them), Lovelock, Thompson notably who both had been training with 1st Team for a while around Christmas time. Max only just a scholar so 2 years to go and will be interesting what happens as his Dad i believe wanted him out as wanted him to get better coaching and that is where his appearance came about. Langlais has 1 year although there were rumours he may not be back next year due to issues on and off the pitch but fingers crossed he will be back and gets a chance.

Billy is one of very few young players in various academies, with a genuine shot at a decent level. Worth noting that you cannot use him as a measuring stick for our own young players. Newcastle are a huge club with a Cat 1 academy. They will have a large team of employees looking after those young players. Most of our talent is either poached or moved by parents to better surroundings. The ones that develop late and make it, are often then in the difficult situation of not getting given the chance. Those who get the chance and impress are unsettled and poached/bought.

Kyrie Pierre, and Bradley burrows going to Aston Villa, did earn the academy good money, Kyrie being 200k, A similar amount was offered for Kieran Phillips to go to Southampton a few years back but was rejected by the club which is a strange decision at the time. A couple of the second years that were just released were being looked at by a couple of big clubs just before being offered scholars, And Greenslade was being looked at by Leeds, West Ham and Man United but Covid then struck and things changed and scaled back. I think other clubs, notably Exeter and Cheltenham are now actively trying to sell their better players to fund their Academies and even help towards the running of their clubs instead of looking at them fitting into their future first team plans.

Unfortunately it is the same with everything, money rules any decision that is made what ever level you are. Even if the FA matches each clubs academy season investments up to a certain amount, which has probably changed since Covid. Those funds now maybe not enough to warrant the club trying to plough more into it.
I have heard there is a very limited pot of money for the Rovers Academy moving forward "at the moment". The second year scholars did leave a few weeks back and I have no doubt that for some it wasn't there ability, more over the cost in giving these players a contract.
I would love too see loads of investment into youth. However all of us on this forum talk about Stadiums, First team players, 20 goal a season strikers. The money has to come from somewhere. You can only cut the cake in so many slices.

Different Josh Jenkins, to who we had on our books, but did have a trial for us before signing for Forest Green. He was Thrown out after Bullying allegations and since has played for Manor Farm, Bitton, and Hallen all not lasting very long. seen him play a few times and is a handful, but this is probably the case off the pitch as well as on it.
