It certainly sounds as the focus was on sales, and not much else - a shame for those who took their kids along, expecting a bit more. Were the players available for authographs afterwards? Yes tilly about 8 of the players stayed behind and went up the along the whole terrace to sign the kids autographs which made their day 🙌. To be honest youv hit the nail on the head their. It felt exactly like the day was done as cheap as possible to make the club the most money. Don’t fall out with the club needing to make money but come on 1 pathetic activity in the whole footprint of the ground for a advertised fun day really? How much would it have cost to have a few stalls bouncy castles and a bit of music? We need to attract as many of the kids that we’re coming last season as possible. I brought a mate and his boy along and had to apologise as I said I thought there would be a lot more for his boy to do. In previous Fun Days there were lots of fairground rides and stalls, tour of the stadium, shirt sales, fashion shows featuring the players in new training gear, supporters groups renewals, YP events, tombola, the police and army turned up, Southmead hospital fundraising stalls, players selling in the shop, face painting, Cadbury's merch, pasty tasting, forum with manager or chairman, kids pirate fancy dress, penalty shoot out v youth team keeper, chance to view from the directors box, etc etc. Not expensive but good community events helped run by the SC. How can the club describe standing in a queue as a good thing other than for sales! Sounds far too money orientated. Might as well call it a Shirt Sell Day, rather than open day or Fun Day.

Forums awash with requests and wishes for some kind of Summer open day event….
ROVERS: “Join us this Saturday for an Open Day where the first team will play an inter squad match, sign autographs & a chance to purchase the new home & away Kits”
GASHEADS: “THIS IS SHT”

Doesn't seeing a full scale training match for free trump all those events, given that we are talking about a football club rather than a school's summer fare?

More of an open day than a fun day by sounds of it. Anyway, 7 days now, next weekend will be a totally different kettle... Exactly what the club advertised it as, an Open Day.

It was an open day not a fun day and it was advertised that way. Had the kit arrived earlier then they probably would have done more but you get the impression that it was put on at short notice.

Exactly what the club advertised it as, an Open Day. What are people moaning about then. That the open day was more like an open day not a fun day.

What are people moaning about then. Just the usual suspects finding something else to moan about? I think that's unfair. Just a misunderstanding based on previous events and the club could have done more to be fair just was no less than advertised too.

When the club have put on some really good fun days in the past it was not unreasonable for fans to expect that to be replicated and to be disappointed when it wasn't.

When I ran the Tombola for 15 or so years, it was a huge effort and took months to collect the prizes. It is not something that can be organized in just a few days.
On the day, I together with a few helpers usually got to the Mem around 8 to set up for a 10am start.
We were ragbag back then and I took over after Ralph Ellis run it and made a huge loss.
It was self funding and I relied on donations, plus managed to spot a few football gems at several charity shops months before the event. Over the years, it is good that local charities were helped out as well. It is amazing the number of football videos like Danny Baker's Own Goals and Gaffs etc that cost parents £9.99 at Christmas, but were available for £1 at a charity shop the next summer.
The FC and SC often gave me free samples from reps but the actual FC stock was purchased at cost price (ie if a mug was bought by the FC at £2.50 and sold for £5, I had to buy it for £5 and this included out of date stock and I only got my money back after the Fun Day).
We did get a couple of free drinks and a meal from the kitchen though.
Am proud to say that when I ran it, the Tombola never made a loss, although the profit was not on a par with the hours of effort. Still seeing the joy on the face of a young kid winning a new home or away shirt for a quid was special.
I am sure if anyone out there wanted to volunteer their own time to help improve the open day in any way, I am sure Tom will be glad to hear from you.
Ps, if anyone wants to volunteer to sell programmes or 50/50s at the Fanzine for an hour or so, I am sure the SC will be glad of any assistance. Just speak to Jamie at the SC shop.

I think it’s this section on the press release that has been missed off the above posts that was misleading…
“We’ll have activities taking place in the car park and there’ll be chances to win prizes throughout the day.”
Activities plural suggested it was going to be like previous fun days when in fact there was only one and no prizes were given out at all as far as I could see.
Anyway I enjoyed watching the boys play regardless and the boy left happy he got his new shirt signed.

Back to the football, does anyone know the line up for the reserve side? I’ve no idea. The only ones I recognised were …. Jak in goal Westbrooke Jones Loft Saunders No one really stood out the first team pretty much dominated the ball and game. Jak pulled off a few saves to keep it 0-0.
