For me for his size, Yates was great in the air, and oooh ahhh John Taylor always seemed to get his head in the right place. Did you mean Gareth Taylor? He would probably be my nominee. I maybe a bit older than you, I was talking the big lanky striker we signed from Cambridge (I think?) Didn’t Devon go the other way? Anyway Gareth was good in the air, I actually went to school with him back in Weston, we played in the same team (Milton Nomads) for a while, I was actually the better player but tragically had my head turned by women and beer. UTG John Taylor I remember John Taylor - Was he around just before or after Paul Miller? Two strikers for us who I felt were plenty good enough and served us well but, for me at least, never in my “top” lists. edit: I’m 59, so it’s always nice to find someone older than me - there are fewer and fewer these days!

To correct a myth - the ball is the same weight as its ever been.
The difference is since the 'heavy' balls of the 50s and 60s it doesn't soak up water which made it heavier.
The main change is, since the mid 80's, the surface of the ball is a lot softer and has more give in it.
The balls used in the 70's had a plastic coating but still felt like you were heading a solid object.
A study would have to done with players who started playing in the 80's before an outright ban was imposed.

I remember talking with the legend that is Harold Jarman and he said it was much heavier and when wet it was like a rock

We used to play headers and volleys over Southey park and loved that game. It would be a great shame to rob the game of that. In fact i think it would be sacrilege to do so. Have they banned boxing, many more casualties there
