Obviously our weak area, but on paper, it looks even worse!
Of our first team squad on the official website we have...
Connolly - CB Fit Gordon - LB Fit but learning Kilgour - gone Anderton - not playing Gibson - injured, loan Clarke - gone Egan - loan Gibbons - RB, LB, CB Fit Thomas - CB Fit Heal - loan Hoole - RB Fit (CB according to Joey but not me, yet)
So that is 2 fit CBs, 1 fit RB, 1 fit LB and 1 fit utility defender at the club. Yikes.
2 to 3 signings total (as per Joey today) will not be enough. Need that in defence at least.

JB seems intent on playing with 3 at the back but we don’t have really strong wing backs
Anderson (when fit) can do a role, but apart from that we don’t have the right players to play that system
I’d be looking to get a left wing back and central defender as a minimum
Connelly, Gibson and NEW would be a decent back 3
Be interesting to see where we go from here. Knowing JB he’ll sign more wingers and strikers and aim to score more than we (inevitably) let in!!

Dont worry, Whelan can play in a back three.
If he gets injured, I am sure Finley can cover.

Obviously not his traditional position and maybe it’s not the answer for every game, but against sides we expect to dominate I think he’s a good weapon to have out there. It’s refreshing to have someone with his directness and end product in that position, rather than a player who has to constantly pass the ball back when faced with an opponent.

Surely all we need to do is replace the departing players, Kilgour and Clarke, it's not like JB's got unlimited funds to just add as many players as he wants to the squad? Personally I'd send Thomas or the injury prone Gibson back and get a better CH but I doubt that's going to ever happen.

Squad maximum size is 22 as well and it can’t be changed after the window closes. Although players under 20 years of age don’t need to be registered. But this obviously makes a difference to who we can bring in. So far two have left who are over 20 years old so we can can only bring two in over the age of 20 as it stands. For me that would be a left back / wing back and a commanding centre half who can play Joes style of tactic.

We clearly need at least one CM so we're limited in how many defenders we can sign.

We only have ONE fit bristol Rovers centreback. James Connolly. The others are not fit or loans. Certainly an issue either now or in yhe summer.

Bit of a rant from Joey yesterday about the defenders. Nothing new there! Personally I dont think we have yet found players that are comfortable in a back 3. Gibson, if he can stay fit would lock down the LCB role. I think Connolly more than capable of the RCB. We need a permanent trustworthy CB for the middle to make this work. That isnt Bobby Thomas. I like him, but think he should be back up/sub or used in a back 4.
Joey is slightly unfair on the defenders as I think the defensive midfielders (Whelan no where near, Coutts off the pace a little) are an issue too. Finely and Rossiter when fit would give me much more confidence. Also 10 of the goals conceded in 2 games were his own selection issues. Take those away and it doesnt look too bad.

This is not something I have seen mentioned much elsewhere but completely agree. The defensive midfield position is just as much of a concern as the defence, if not potentially more of an issue for me.

The target and therefore the strength of the squad needs to be able to stay in Division 1 this season by reaching around 52 points. Joey has repeated the target again this week. I personally think the squad is more than good enough to reach 52 points, add a couple of players this month, achieve the target, and then dice and slice the numbers and ability of the squad during the summer. Looking forward to Accys tomorrow, weather permitting, will be interesting to see how Joey sets the team up, if the game goes ahead I thinking a 4-3 win.

The sooner experienced defenders are brought into the club the better. The defending has been abysmal with players appearing to go through the motions with little care and effort. I am glad Joey is clamping down and hopefully propelling the club even higher.

I agree with a lot of that, but do you mean Gibson and not Gibbons would lock down the LCB spot? Gibson looks a real class act, a good defender and very comfortable on the ball, but just can't seem to stay fit and seems to have been the case during previous loans and at parent club too. Unfortunate as he looks like he has the ability to play higher.
