Sad news, a brilliant broadcaster.
The Gas made it onto his list of top 50 commentaries. Unfortunately it was for losing 9-0 to Tottenham.

Sad to wake up to this new this morning. Hearing Motty always brings back childhood memories, of being allowed to stay up late and watch Match of the Day with my Dad.

One of the all time great commentators, not just in Football but sport full stop.
Remember him commentating on our FA Cup 3rd Round game against Liverpool at Twerton.
Kept calling Boris, David Meeehew🙂

As the proud owner of subscribers copy no.264 of the original Bristol Rovers F.C. - A complete record 1883-1987 it always pleased me that subscriber no.182 was John Motson!
Always a stickler for detail, he spoke to the Rovers players prior to the game against Liverpool at Twerton. At the time most gasheads switched backwards and forwards from calling Boris either Meeehew or Mayhew. Motty confirmed the pronunciation and screamed Mee-hew several times during the game. Boris received lots of comments poking fun at the commentary over the next few days and told all those who’d listen that Motty got it right but even if he’d been getting it wrong at least he was saying it and there were several Liverpool players names he never mentioned at all!

Legend!
I saw him walking across Twerton pitch in 90s and thought then he looked old.
Had respect wherever he went and showed an admirable high standard for his craft and integrity in his work without the operating guidelines of being woke.
I also liked his fantasy football inclusion with baddiel and skinner!
He had a voice of football that sums up an era and it's a shame he's passed away.
A true football servant.

The voice of MOTD and live cup games as a kid. Legend Tho I was convinced when I was younger he was biased towards Liverpool (bro supported them, i hated them) but i realise now, they were just the best team around at the time!

Kept calling Boris, David Meeehew🙂 Remember it well, then got to know Boris quite well along with the ladies man that is Vaughan Jones a few years ago, asked Boris how he pronounces his surname and he said it is pronounced Meeehew, the things ya learn! RIP Motty, a fantastic servant to football commentary.

Touch, set, bang!! Bruce didn’t even sniff it Top comms from Motty, that tackle on Pounder though in the build up😵😵😵 21st Birthday that day, arrived in Arkles around midday for a night game, kept getting ploughed with Vodka chasers, propped up by mates through turnstiles, took seat, fell asleep, missed Billys goal and woke up to be landed on from a few sat behind watching police draw batons to keep gasheads off the pitch. Then had to wait until HTV West news the next day to see the goal for the first time, easily and by far the biggest ever regret watching Rovers.

He was to Football what Murray Walker was to Formula 1. Going to be missed.

Sad news. One of the game’s finest commentators and broadcasters. Iconic. Thoughts and condolences to his family and friends. RIP Motty. Absolute football icon, i remember him being on a question of sport and he, basically, was a one man team, the others were reduced to bit part contestants and he answered all of the questions, correctly. Will have to see if i can find that episode. RIP Motty, you were never dull and always extremely well informed his notes were incredible, not a man who took his job lightly

RIP Motty, you were never dull and always extremely well informed his notes were incredible, not a man who took his job lightly I was listening to Talk Sport earlier and Jonathan Pearce was on giving a tribute. He said that Motty was an inspiration to every single other commentator. Whether games he was going to be commentating on involved Manchester United or Macclesfield, he would attempt to watch them 2-3 times beforehand, to research and just be as thorough as he could with any information. Pure dedication to his craft.

A great no doubt about it but for me Barry Davies (and where are the Germans, and frankly, who cares!) and Harry Carpenter (Get in there Frank!) were the best ever sports commentators.
