Not sure if anyone saw the drama series about the Brinks Matt gold bullion robbery in the early 80's.
I knew John Palmer lived in Wick Wick but I couldn't remember that the money laundering centre was in Bedminster!
By the law of averages the benefits of crime must have been paid to Ashton Gate. Dirty money buying pints in the local, fags and papers at the newsagents etc,etc who must have had dealing with City fans.
Funny how it co-incides with their rise from bankruptcy!
I believe Ian Willmott actually worked at the Bedminster branch of Barclays where they were depositing the dirty money - probably a few years before I guess.
Not so long ago Andy Llewellyn was convicted of passing info to local gangs when he found out that families on his post rounds were on their hols when he worked as a postman.
Not that we are totally spotless. There was the player who played under Buckle? in a league cup game who got done for match fixing in conference south and in the 60s Million and Williams.
I remember a panarama type programme featuring a sting at a game when a Rovers fan got caught by the police as they knew he went to games and had avoided capture at other known locations.
Takes all sorts I suppose.

In the channel 5 documentary it was said some of the gold was rumored to have been buried underneath the pitch at the memorial ground now we know why the pitch is dug up every season ?

Takes all sorts I suppose. Isn’t Wick Wick on the Downend to Yate road? He actually lived just outside of Wick on the road up to Lansdown Racecourse, past Tracey Park Golf Course, at a place called Battlefields. I used to serve him, and his then wife, fuel at the garage where I worked in the village. He probably bought this from the proceeds of the Bedminster enterprise you mentioned because they previously lived in Pendennis Rd Staple Hill. I’d just joined the RAF at the time of Brinks Mat raid. Shame really as I would have liked to think they would have been more generous with their tips!!

He was good friends of Billy Ware the old scrap dealer in later life. A friend of mine crossed Billy at a charity event and the fall out including my friend going into hiding until a resolution was found. Their involvement in the underworld was real and Palmers demise was no surprise to the police who stated that there were over 30,000 suspects into his death by shooting.

The absolute shocker being that he was shot yet Police said it was a heart attack and nothing further was said or actioned for a long while. How the hell coould they not notice bullet holes and blood and say it was a heart attack, trouble is Palmer or Brummy to his associates, had a lot of enemies as he was the only one who made money from this by both investing his share and also scamming many thousands of people on his time share scam. I do not wish to name drop but i knew him, well. He was a regular visitor at our house but when i was a small kid and he’d always give me a tenner, which mum quickly took, he had a fairly strong Brum accent and they did not even try to show this in the programme. To a young kid, i saw him as a nice guy and only later was told he could be a bully. He even, at one stage made the rich list, in equal position to the then queen, with 300 million. Not bad given that this started with 30. The Police are , officially, still looking for the killer but they will not be looking too hard as they also wanted him out of the way. The most sinister and fear inducing person i met from those characters was Noye. That bloke has the evil about him and you feel it extremely quickly. For obvious reasons i will not say where i would see them but i can say that there were regular meetings between London/Essex and Bristols underworld figures.

I don't think they portrayed John Palmer very accurately, as you say, a Brummie not a Worzel. Apparently he could be a nasty piece of work, Marnie tried to divorce him 3 times but he was not having it. When he was in prison, she used to buy him new shoes from Russell & Bromley in Bath, and was completely open with the assistants as to why he couldn't go the shop and try them on before buying.

Ooo...name dropping. How novel. Palmer was a horrible twat. No loss to society. Spot on. And when he was found dead , it was later that day at the autopsy that it was found he had been shot. The reason the police did not realise that at the scene was that he had only just undergone surgery for a gall bladder removal and that wound was concealing the bullet wounds.

It was actually 6 days before they discovered he had been shot, although paramedics at the scene highlighted the amount of blood and a possible exit wound to Police, they ignored this and didn't request an Inspector to attend the scene as it was a possible murder.
