I can't see Cox could have saved a header which went in off the inside of the post, the issue is that Wilson shouldn't be letting the goal scorer have the chance to score in the first place?

You could be right, will have to watch it back. But I don't have long term concerns with either of them to he honest. A disappointing moment in an otherwise solid display

Would have taken a draw beforehand, so that result will do for me. We were told that the players were well drilled and knew what they had to do - I thought it showed in that performance. A few doubts about Cox in the air - a bit of mixture. On the whole, very happy. Andy Mangan's blue and white army!

With the chances Portsmouth had I'll take a point on the board from this game.
Connelly had me nervy a few times much rather play Taylor or Crama so he'll have to prove himself as our 4th choice improver.

PV fans will be calling for DC's return at this rate, that's a strange result given Barnsley seemed to be in turmoil (have they even played any pre--season games?) and PV had recruited well this summer. Some on here saying Vale have recruited well and we should have signed Connor Ripley instead of Port vale getting there first. I heard that Ripley was supposedly coming here before he went to Port Vale. I guess before the game we would have taken a point but it’s disappointing to concede so late. Second half we struggled to cope with them just putting the ball on to us, which is why we need a plan b when our preferred way of playing isn’t working. People were questioning the Connolly/ Taylor sub, wouldn’t surprise me if that was an excuse to get him in the starting 11 next week.

Bittersweet what with the last-gasp equaliser. But it's a point away from home against a team who should be top 8, nailed-on. First game, which we usually lose. Content, if mildly frustrated. But it's undoubtedly a better start than we've had for eons.
PS - PV losing by 7. Wonder if they'll be singing 'bring back DC' in a week!

Good point on paper.
I would imagine quite a bit of squad rotation in the first 4-5 games before we start to see a settled group.
Wouldn't be surprised to see 4-5 changes for Ipswich. Would be good to see Jones get a few minutes if he is staying, rather than just EFL trophy games. Would expect Belly to start.

The game rather passed me by as Ms Clovis and I were at the Great British Beer Festival, an excellent event. But pleased with a point The When Saturday Comes, arriving today, guide to the season has us down as finishing 11th, which sound about right. The other lot are down as 18th in the Championship.

Solid opening to the season, shame about the end. Could definitely see the style we want to play and the goal very much summed it up. We will have to improve our game management towards the end of games when we are marginally ahead, even in tricky atmospheres like today.
But overall a decent start, hopefully will only improve as our squad gets more in sync with each other and the system. Also, with some more incomings and returns from injury. UTG!

Great game, good day out when the rain stopped! Thought we looked positive and exciting. Little team chat with Joey about game management on Monday I reckon, but no disaster.
Pompey fan view, always worth a watch -

Unless Barnsley have secretly signed a load of decent players today's looks a complete fluke result, although I bet there's some angry Barnsley fans tonight given the restricted away following next week. If the new stand was built/open we'd probably now have a sell out new week. Do you think all 7-0 results are freaks topper? Have you seen the stats? It does look like freak result.

Belshaws contract should be paid up and not be allowed near the first team after his tantrums last year.

Good result but it’s always gutting conceding that late 😞 never mind if you can draw your away games at the likes of Pompey and win your home games we’ll be up there at the end of the season.

Using your logic we wouldn’t have signed Luke Thomas, who had a stormer yesterday.

I can't see Belshaw being here much longer unless he's content to sit on the bench all season. As Cox is clearly now the new No 1 when we've even built our style of play around him.

Just got back..
Morning, Gas!
What a great away day yesterday!? (Unless you were 10 years old smashed out your tree at half time Burberryied up like Jordans lost child!? Nick nick!)
Great to see some of you yesterday....even in the Nell Gwynne, Eldon Arms and Shaven Raven.... what a hoot!
Got soaked because of God's p!SS but that just made the day so much better and many thanks to alpha cabs for their kindness.
Anyhoos onto less important things...
I like the Keep. Maybe dawn of a new era as twilight Belly fades?
Wilson smart and commanding. Conners needed his stability around him. Gordon still a bit wary of.... nice to see JG back, who might actually give him a run for his money if he can stay fit.
Aaron dances. Finley prances. Luke Thomas finished (what a delicious assist from Brown?) and was a constant threat, but for me, jewel in the crown was Grant Ward. Wardy, my m o m for his hard work keeping the ball moving, interceptions and always being involved. He must have gotten through some miles?
Pompey obviously a good team but I thought first half we dominated midfield.
Bishop poor finishing let us off the hook, and when they inevitably threw kitchen sink at us, we defended ok.... just that, ok. I always thought a goal was around the corner, not 100% confident, because it felt we were on last ditch defending mode. And no counter options as our break away wasn't fast enough.
Great to see Connor back.... great reception for him.
But we lost the initiative on the match and I suppose with a heavy heart a draw was fair result, especially them being all over us at times in 2nd half, a shared points we'll take with glee because we would have lost that last season - no doubt.
Perhaps the defensive subs contributed to us conceding? Maybe? ....a bit harsh.
Great effort lads to compete fairly and come away with a deserved point! We outsung their fans some of the time, so we must have been doing something right..?
One last word on safe standing.... excellent effort their from Pompey. Your choice. And everyone gets their own crash barrier. I saw hard of walking using them to stable themselves in getting up, a brilliant idea and the first time used them. Big thumbs up!
Onto home v Barnsley.....top of the table.....7-0 winners.....what could possibly go wrong?

Obviously we don't know the kids mentality, but when something goes wrong or a young keeper makes a big mistake in a real game, sometimes it can hit them hard and they get the yips. We've seen it many many times before. If you don't have it in your locker, all the training in the world cant really help if you have a howler and get thrown under the bus and slated from all sides. IMO we definitely need an older head around, who can show bouncebackability, I think the term was coined.

My thoughts on yesterday.
I was nervous when I saw Cox starting in goal but fear not he was superb. He exuded confidence far beyond his years. well done that lad.
Luke Thomas ran his absolute socks off. I saw it towards the end of his first stint here but bloody hell doesn't he ever work hard to close defenders down.
Last season's gas would have capitulated under the pressure Pompey had us under second half but this back line seems so much more assured and secure than last season's.
In the pub after Pompey fans were raving about jevani brown saying what a player we had on our hands. I thought he was ok but they seemed to hold him in very high regard.
Final thought. Safe standing. Brilliant. If the fruity ever comes off this is a must. Take note wael and Hussein. Utg.
