But isn't it exactly the same as the chants you'd hear at match day? Isn't going "whey!" when an opposition striker hits it out of the stadium after going through on goal winding him/them up? What about "you're dung ahhhh!" when their keeper is in front of the Blackthorn? "You're dung and you're getting wet?" Trash talk and gloating is the life blood of football, we all participate from time to time whether down the pub or on the terraces, some people do it online, deal with it, why give the internet special status as a medium for communication? The idea that the level of banter between fans on the internet needs to be at the same sort of level as that of fans in a football stadium is pretty risible. And for evidence, try getting two-hundred people to chant your post. I don't think ihatefootball is saying that it "needs" to be at the same level, just that it can be if we want. Naturally, it's easier to express more detail in the written word than in a chant, but good old-fashioned goading and gloating has its place, even online.

I trust many of you have seen some of the posts on the skrill premier banter page on Facebook. Much of it makes me recoil. As for banter. I'd rather save it till we have a confirmed ticket out if this league! Oh go on - stick your neck out and take a risk. Not much point in abusing them when it's all over. What if we come back down again? They'll laugh at us then, so you'd have to wait until you're on your deathbed before you risk sticking it to them. Enjoy the the ups and accept the downs. We're a long time dead, you know.

I think his point was that it was morally the same, not that everything said online could be chanted, but perhaps he'll speak for himself. Do we need to "mitigate" gloating between football fans? Perhaps impoliteness should have debit points awarded and the worst offender has to agree to stay in at lunchtime.

Maybe try watching competitive chess or something if you find it so risible.

Just pointing out that the medium lends context to the message. That's not exactly controversial. But, you know, if you want to trade vague insults about chess, that's good too.

Well, imo, it was a fair summary of your post, and I made it in good faith. I could go through your post and explain where I got it from, but you're being a bit of a dick, already, so I suspect there wouldn't be any point.

People like yourself who scour the net desperately seeking something to be offended by are literally meat and drink for people trolling other teams forums. It's such a hilarious self-fulfilling cycle of stupid. Chess players have dicks the size of sugar puffs.

Why so delicate? I'll just give you some space then. Sorry to offend.

The attempt to make us all reasonable and polite didn't last long. Thank god! I'm totally happy to insult people on the net, or in real life, or at the football. I was simply pointing out that it's a different thing, in different contexts, and is worth considering differently. Not sure why that's so difficult. Maybe it just sounds a bit like a different argument (like the one on hooliganism, or correct behaviour at the football), and you're assuming I'm making that one, or something?

Oh dear. The attempt to make us all reasonable and polite didn't last long. Thank god! Oh Mark, it was terrible, they put me on a prawn sandwich IV drip. Paradoxically, I think prawns live on crap, so they're a fun symbol of the gentrification of football. I suppose I get a bit nervous when pressure is put upon football fans to abide by the rules of the drawing-room (whatever that was). Some vile and stupid insults are traded, but it's part of that world. There are so few areas left in society where people can just say what they buggering well like. If they make themselves look stupid, so be it. Personally, I barely bother with chanting, but then I'm an old bore. But, as the tentacles of authority and conformity creep everywhere, I quite like to see nutters shouting outrageously unfair and obscene remarks in football grounds and - if they want to - online too. To risk laughing at opponents is ok with me, even if it all goes horribly wrong. After all, it's no different from calling City fans Sh1theads and we wouldn't want to stop that now would we?

At yesterday's League Cup final, all tickets had a hotline number printed on them and fans were urged to use it to report any bad behaviour and nasty chants. Ostensibly, this was about racism, but I'd guess they'll accept any kind of complaint.

Man after my own heart. Thankfully human history is full of people who try, often quite successfully to make others live by their own personal moral standards but fortunately, sooner or later they all fail.

The Premier League is kind of lost to fans now, the only way it'll change is when it realizes it's turned away too many loyal supporters to be profitable and by then it'll be too late. That's what I think anyway. I see more people my age thinking quite kindly of the non-league scene, my football nerd Arsenal mate practically bit my arm off when I invited him to the Mem and was stunned at the sight of an actual terrace. Plus teams like AFC Wimbledon and FC United making a good go of it and teams like Clapton setting new standards in atmosphere, I see a bright future for "real" footy. God that was a ramble, sorry.
