There is a lot made of our budget which is always the easy excuse when we beat a team. This is where I feel for Richard, with Saturday being a prime example as the Chester Chronicle says we are probably under achieving in 6th with our budget!! It will all come out in the wash but I would say Rendel is about right with our position but a few teams may surprise him as a few are over and under. There is no point being secretive on budgets as it becomes public knowledge. I would say you could throw a blanket over the teams between 4th and 10th but i reckon we are 8th. 3 teams below us will be above us and 4 above us are below on your list Rendel would be my best guess come May.
Ours is likely to come out at just under 750k all in, bonuses, accommodation the lot. One of our new signings was surprised to hear that some of our players have second jobs (only a couple to be fair) to make ends meet as his manager had told him that all our players earn at least 1k a week. The fact is that there are only 3 who do in the squad which amazed him but that is the convenient spin. Our budget is healthy but not crazy. We try and get value for money. January is a prime example of how we run. We lost Fleetwood, Wright, Yemi, Collins and got in Partington ,Burton, Dan, Pell and Howard. All the players that left received at least the same wage if not more. The net result is that our wage bill has remained the same.
I would take with a pinch of salt clubs who have no money. They tend to have no money when it suits but are able to sign players when it suits too. Our crowds are just above halfway, our budget is similar and our team is doing better than that which I believe is credit to us, especially Richard. We went with a small squad and chose to try and sign 4 quality players as opposed to 6 average players and rolled the extra two wages into the four players leaving us with a small squad. We felt that was sensible for us and if we had a chance in January we took the view we would try and strengthen. We feel we did good business for the club and have obtained good value for money which is key. If you overpay for players clearly your money won't go as far.
Also if our players were on such great sums how can we have four players go to Woking, Sutton, Havant and FGR respectively, two of which are in the league below, and be financially either better off or the same. Surely they would not be able to match our imaginary wages!!
My final point would be that I have heard numerous managers this year comment on our budget after playing them, I know that having spoken to the clubs owners and discussed wages, budgets and ideas a few of those managers have a budget comparable or even more than us. Torquay, Kidderminster & Lincoln are just three relatively big teams in this league who appear to struggle financially if you believe the press, indeed one club has regular articles on the BBC website where the manager frequently states that they cannot pay players or are struggling financially however I know one of those teams has a slightly but not massively higher budget than us.
All of this is in some way to be expected and what other fans and clubs perceive we cannot control which is of no concern. What is of concern is that our fans can have an appreciation and insight into the club that is theirs. You can then judge how the current custodians try to run the club and how the board and manager spend the money the club has at its disposal. Much of which the fans have paid by supporting the club in various ways through tickets, merchandise etc. Our fans can then judge us fairly with the full facts rather than on hearsay. How others judge us we cannot control but I would never condone our manager commenting on another teams budget and using it as an excuse for a poor result. We have been beaten by teams with bigger budgets and lower budgets but the managers of those teams still need to spend the money wisely and manage the players properly.
This is a topic over the season that has become a little bit frustrating but hopefully this gives our fans a better insight into things which will be expanded on at our next forum no doubt.
I wish you all the best of luck for the rest of the season, and I feel sure that you will finish as Champions (deservedly so!)
It’s a shame that we won’t be welcoming you to our place next season (although you never know what the Cup will throw). You would not believe the improvements that have been made to the ground since your visit. (Or did you watch the Macclesfield game on BT?)
