Although yesterday turned out be a good point after Barnet's result how many of us walked away from Macclesfield thinking "opportunity lost."
Make no mistake Macclesfield weren't much good but they dominated the area of the centre of the pitch and in fairness probably had just as many half chances due to defensive errors rather than creativity.
I have read enough posts slating Balanta and going forward he, like nearly every Rovers player, offered nothing. Defensively it was obvious why he started as he, unlike Dawson worked really well with Leadbitter to block out the Silkman's one danger man. This was proved after Balanta went off.
But what really got my goat was the total non-existence of our own central midfield. It was as light weight as it has ever been and shows why Mansell will come straight back in next week and boy we miss Sinclair so much.
I won't start a Lines or a Lockyer bashing as it was there for all to see. Where is this quality that CL is supposed to have. Yet again he disappeared for 80mins of the game and in this league you need fight and aggression. He does not possess this in his locker. I rate Lockyer but he isn't a central midfielder.
Apart from some poor kicking I though Puddy was Man of the Match for his first half save alone and for a short man he was brilliant in the air.
Referee was poor and attention seeking

Can't disagree with any of that - Sadly.

Far too many of that team drifted in and out for me. Thought Puddy was excellent, but Easter didn't do an awful lot, Taylor was a close second, midfield was there mostly in spirit, Balanta showed a bit and Dawson even less. Hmmm, what a time to put in a poor one.
Still, onwards and hopefully upwards

Exactly what I said at the game yesterday. We were totally overrun in midfield and it put us under pressure far too much. I think Mansell has to slot straight back in and unfortunately that means TL on the bench for the foreseeable.
I rate TL but he has probably one good game to every 3 average games and he is in no way half of a two man midfield. If he was a deep lying midfielder on his own I think it would suit him far better.

Wish Monkhouse( and Mansell )were more involved than they are.Their contribution is too often peripheral.Gosling(on bench for gibraltar to-day) skillfull but also not very often involved as players need to be at this mundane level.

Hmmm, what a time to put in a poor one. Still, onwards and hopefully upwards His distribution was shocking. Kicked it straight out of play at least 3 times, put us in trouble with a poor throw out to Leadbitter in the 2nd half when he should have held it to let us get out. He pulled off a very, very good save but all 'keepers should be good shot stoppers as that is there job. I rate Puddy and would start him over Mildenhall again on Friday but he needs to sort his distribution out.

think lines and mansel will be a good combo in midfield . 5 winnable games left and if we win them all I think we will win the league UTG !

I have been surprised how Easter and Lines have not found it easy to play in the Conference as they come from higher divisions. Also I expected more from Monkhouse and Dawson. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Puddy prefers to distribute the ball with his hands, i can only assume DC is telling him to hit it up the sideline towards Monky, with a strong wind there was always the likelyhood of it going out. I think its only fair DC has to shoulder some of the responsibility for that. IMO Puddy is a very good keeper at this level.

We need to win a midfield battle and Lines is not a ball winner. Whether I like him or not (and we know I don't) he is not a player who will get involved in a midfield battle, he is too lightweight. He always was and he let Campbell do that side of it. We cannot afford passengers at this level.
As for the last minute free kick. The number of people shouting 'pee off Lines' let Brown take it was quite audible.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Easter will get better with games had no service yesterday and is still getting his sharpness back . lines has quality that will show in the remaining games , especially with mansell returning.

With all due respect...what quality. I keep hearing Lines has quality. Maybe in a midfield where he can walk around leisurely but he is now in the conference and midfielders at this level battle for every ball which is way Sinclair has become such a hit and a crowd pleaser. We cannot afford passengers and yesterday Lines had the opportunity to take control of a conference game and he as expected disappeared when he was most needed.

I feel its a waste of time defending his ability to you having read your previous posts about the player, I just hope he plays well enough over the next five games to convince you of his worth to the team.

He should be better than Lockyer, Lockyer is a bloody right back. For a guy who has come from a League 1 club you would not only expect him to control his teams midfield but the whole of the midfield in general. He has never done this, not at any club he has been at.
He is a luxury player and anyone with an unbiased opinion would see that.
Did you see him get stuck into any midfield tackles. Simple question for you then you can tell me I am wrong. Why is it that the Macclesfield team seemed to find plenty of time on the ball in midfield and we didn't at any point.

With Lockyer and Lines together in midfield it is obvious who will be the playmaker and who will be the workhorse.
Yesterday Lockyer did the workhorse job better than Lines did the playmaker job. You need a blend of craftsmen and tradesmen and it was the craft we were missing yesterday.
Lines clearly didn't think it was his job to any tackling yesterday which I guess is ok if you deliver at the other end - but he didn't.
Tough one on Lockyer if he is dropped to the bench as he hasn't done much wrong and he does have the habit of popping up at the right time when we need defensive cover.
Personally I would go back to 3 in midfield, Mansell and Lockyer with Lines pushing forward - that way his lack of defensive effort won't matter so much.
The challenge is to get the team playing against teams who will park the bus and try to keep a clean sheet. We have struggled all year with that.

Your bias against Chris Lines is clouding your judgement. At this level every team is packed with battlers getting stuck in - what Rovers have been crying out for all season in some creativity in midfield. Chris Lines has the potential to provide this creativity and I'm sure that Darrell Clarke (who thankfully does have an unbiased view) will continue to pick him for the starting line up.
