If you were the financial director, would you want to win the division outright or go into the playoffs?

Toni Watola said at the start of the season as Finance Director he would prefer a Wembley victory with the extra revenue that comes with it, but would ultimately prefer us to get promoted as champions so as not to experience the lottery that is known as the Play Offs!
I thought it was a fair answer.

Work out how much money we're better off being in the league, call it X. Work out how much we'd make by going to Wembley, call it Y.
Would you be prepared to gamble X to win Y on behalf of the club?
Put another way, and pulling numbers mostly out of the air, if we don't win the league and Nick Higgs said he's put a million quid on us winning the playoffs at the local bookies and we stand to win £200,000, would you be pleased with him?

Is it really that financially profitable at this level? Okay, we'd get one more sell out crowd at home and maybe 30k at Wembley. But if we were playing Eastleigh, would one game with a 35k crowd would be that profitable? Nah, let's get it done in the last two games

Its not just the value of next seasons revenue, its the possibility that our stay in this league might be several years if we lost in the playoffs this time around...

If I was the Director of Finance I would like to be able to count to ten, and also to wee straight.

Play-offs. A sell-out at home, then a nice pay-day at Wembley.
I'm not sure if the same applies in The Conference, but in The football league the gate revenue is shared equally to all four teams who reach the play-offs. Even so it's all extra money.

Most people by choice would like to go up via the Play Offs but for everyone who does there are 3 who don't so lets get up as Champs and make sure.

I did ask before who got the money. I know here in Australia the play off money at the end of the season was divided amongst all the teams. Not just those in the playoffs.

Sounds stupid, but even if it was guaranteed (promotion via 1st or promotion via play-offs) I'd still go for as champions. Not saying that I wouldn't enjoy another day at Wembley, but we've done that, and I've never seen us win a title. Also, with the Sainsbury's stuff going on in May, I'd rather the club went on with that in the knowledge of guaranteed FL status for August. I don't mind going up in the play-offs, don't get me wrong But realistically as you say there's a lot of risk.

Probably nonsense but I keep getting the notion that seeing us take a large number of fans to Wembley would make our case for a new stadium more convincing to the judge.

I see where you're coming from. But there's two sides to it though... the judge will probably have to consider how necessary a 21k all seater stadium would be to a club who may well still be in the Conference in 5 years time. That's why I think securing FL status before the court case could be pretty vital - because it gives the impression that the club is on the up etc. A sell out against Alfreton would have just the same effect if you ask me. If they want evidence that Bristol has the potential, they just need to look at '07 or even the numbers taken to Wembley by the sheeds this season.

Is it just me, or should the only thing the judge be considering is the contract itself? Surely whether we need the new stadium is nothing to do with it?

At the start of the season it was made clear that our players would be rewarded if they succeeded and I suspect that means that some of the bonuses are going to be allocated towards that .

I guess a number will be rewarded by pay rises not season anyway if we did get promoted!

Every legal twist and turn we have sees half of us getting the wrong end of the stick. No problem with that, but (to clarify) the only thing the judge will be presented evidence about is whether BRFC and Sainsburys have a legally binding contract for the sale of the Mem or not. The reason the UWE is planned for 21000 is that South Gloucestershire Council needed a 21000 sports stadium/arena to fit in with their 'Masterplan' for their region - we got planning permission easier because it met that criteria.
