had a discussion with my old man in the car on the way home yesterday, which went along the line of "we only seem to get a decent volume with the one song"....
my old man who's almost 70 with all of his infinate wisdom said; "well it's one more than most clubs these days"....
discuss....

It's difficult to get any atmosphere going at Wembley. All of the "singers" will be split up, so getting songs going is difficult. Obviously though, most of us know Irene, so we all can sing a long to it.

Also we would have had a lot more day trippers there yesterday than Grimsby did. To be fair though having watched it back we seemed to make our fair share of noise, although admittedly at the time it did seem like we got out sung.

I'm more worried about the drink driving. being serious, it was difficult yesterday, with day trippers, spread out, and having more than Grimsby to be nervous about! BTW - excellent 'as it happens' Guardian blog yesterday - www.theguardian.com/football/live/2015/may/17/bristol-rovers-v-grimsby-conference-play-off-final-liveDescribes 'Irene' as "their celebrated, and wonderful, anthem" and "Rovers are the favourites, though there’s unlikely to be much in this, though I think they’d win the battle of the club anthems, not just against Grimsby but against any other club in England."

I went and I tried to sing but alas I had lost my voice this week and all that came of it was strained words and coughing

I was in the designated singing session and tried many times to get songs started to be honest I thought our vocal support was awful we seemed to have been out sung all game only disappointing part of the game

Travelled back to Sheffield after the game and there were lots of Grimsby fans - I said to some we were sat with about how vocal their support was and he agreed but also stated that being tightly packed in one level made it easier to get lots involved at the same time. He also said that on several occasions especially after we scored "Irene'' was awesome so loud and really spine tingling - he said it is a really special anthem but we need to sing other songs/chants as well. I then politely pointed out 'WE ARE GOING UP'

I think we did ok, considering what was at stake. But i must hand it to the Grimsby fans singing which i thought was superb.

We only have one song everyone's in on but I've only been going since 2012 and I've heard the following regularly.
- Goodnight Irene - We're Rovers supporters - B! (B!) R! (R!) etc... - Darrell Clarke's barmy army - Hello, hello, we are the Rovers boys - Oh when the Gas go marching in - West Country la la la
Granted most of them are Rovers variations of generic ones but it's the little addition that make them special.
"We'll always follow, the boys in blue (AND WHITE!)" "Darrell Clarke's barmy army (B-R-F-C!)"
My Arsenal supporting mate absolutely loves the "YOU'RE SH*T AHHHHHH!" thing we do the the oppo goalie. Makes him water himself every time.
We have a lot of creative chants coming out at the moment "I wanna dance with Will Puddy/Ba-lalalalala-lanta." etc but these things take time and don't work in a crowd of 15k+ part-timers.
Grimsby were amazing yesterday, I take nothing away from them at all but they were also up after 2 minutes, they felt it was their time, we were scared shitless. I think their drum did a good job in keeping them all in tempo with each other.
If you're not happy with our songs, redouble your efforts next season as I plan to.

To be fair I thought that Grimsby did better than us yesterday as they had a few different ones.
At one stage it sounded a bit like the warriors beating their shields in the film Zulu and that was effective

I warned prior to the Wembley game that Grimsby would out sing us and by this I meant with content not volume. Goodnight Irene was the loudest by far but the impact is lessened by not singing at least one verse with a chorus either side. We have a magnificent anthem so why not make the most of it. Grimsby won because they had many songs/chants and they were very persistent with them (see youtube in their home game against us).

Is it just me or did anyone else not find there atmosphere that impressive?
Apart from that bleed'in drum they didn't create nothing with out it! All it did was get on my nerves and he just banged on it repeatedly!
Give me Irene any day!! I loved it when it over took that feeeeking drum they had!

UTG agree.I think we are OK at the moment, but only OK. the one thing I think we really miss from the 'old days' is more chants / nicknames for PLAYERS. maybe it's just the modern game, when players come and go all the time? But then again maybe it's also the modern fan, as Lee Brown has played 95% of games for 4 season on the trot and we still don't have a song about him. Similar for Tom Parkes. BTW - I find it hilarious that I've recently noticed teams with no unique songs are taking the mick out of us for having 'Irene'! Must be total jealousy. Irene is honestly one reason I am a Gashead. I would feel lost if I supported a team without a proper, special, old, unique song. My best friend is a Norwich fan and I go to quite a few matches with him. 'On the Ball City' is called the oldest football song the in UK [maybe Europe?] that is still in use today. It makes going to their matches special. Anything less is dull. oh, and P.S. - On the Blackthorn and at away games, there are always little comments, shouts, semi-chants that are often funny as hell, but never make it to a proper song/chant. Things like that are what make a game entertaining IMO. It's not just about 'big' songs that lots join in on, and frankly I don't care what the oppo sing.

Apart from the odd Irene yes it was insulting.
Banging on a drum isn't atmosphere to me, It's just annoying.

Agree with a lot of the above.
I'm really pleased that we have regularly taken to singing 3 verses of "Goodnight Irene" as well as the chorus at the Mem, and a few lubricated old Tote Enders(!) have brought some of the older chants back into fashion, but getting anything other than the chorus of Irene to work at Wembley, let alone the Rovers intro was always going to be difficult.
How did Grimsby succeed? I hate to say it, but the drummer(s) worked for them. I f'in hate drums at grounds, but it made the "Fish" chant really work.
