Well thank God we did it. Great job done by everyone connected to the club from Manager to Players to Supporters.
As Mansell slotted home the pivotal penalty the feeling was fantastic, the hard hard work put in by everyone was acknowledged and the relief could be felt everywhere with a little blue and white in their blood. All concerned deserve massive pats on the back for the great achievement of bouncing back after just one year.
And yet, being a sensitive soul my happiness and pride had a twinge of sadness if i'm honest. I've always wore my heart on my sleeve and my mind drifted to a year ago to where this non-league experience and despair had began. I've heard a few people say they are now glad we went down and i understand their point about rebuilding etc.
But for me, i felt for those who missed out on our joy yesterday, those who i would describe as "collateral damage" last year. During the summer reshuffle, rebuild, call it what you will we had to say goodbye to some long serving, hard working genuine Rovers people some of which i got to know who worked for our club through good and bad times, some of whom were purely the victim of a club failing as a whole, not individually, and i hope they also found some enjoyment yesterday.
I also felt massively for some of the players who had to be let go this time last year again through little fault of their own, i know we've had some players who didn't seem to care much, but remember some worked their asses off and again we're victims of others mistakes rather than their own. I'm particularly thinking of some of our youngsters like Pat Keary, Josh Southway, Mitch Harding, Jordan Goddard to name but a few and that great Youth Team who did the League/Cup double just a few seasons ago and never really got the chance they deserved due to our relegation and cost cutting. It's worth remembering that one of my personal favorites Ellis Harrison, who eventually turned out to be our trump card this season, would almost definitely have been sent packing had he not had a contract in place. It's small margins for young players setting out in the game, they could all so easily be sat here now celebrating promotion with us.
I hope we now kick on and the rebuild is remembered as something that just had to happen to move forward, if we can eventually build UWE then who knows where we could be in the next five years. Let's hope everyone at our club has learnt from mistakes in the past and continues to plan and build a great future. Darrell and his staff have begun a revolution, an ethos of hard work and humbleness that must continue no matter who comes and goes along the way.
Let's raise a glass to a deserved Promotion and to Absent Friends. UTG
