I think this subject may have been aired before,If so I apologise.
I was recently reading a booklet issued by Circadian trust on behalf of S Glos council. It carried info re activities for children at the Council Leisure Centres . One of those activities is a Football Camp run by Bristol City - there are twelve in all lasting throughout the Summer holidays . It annoys me that City seem to have stolen a march on us yet again providing themselves with valuable publicity in our own 'backyard'.
Do we just sit back and allow this to happen each year ? What should Rovers be doing ? Who's supposed to have the responsibility for being proactive in this 'field' ?

Based on the size of the size of the Communituy Dept they do a fantastic job. You may recall that funding was reduced by a huge percentage following the relegation. Much credit must go to Ken Masters for going to endless meetings and practically begging for any grants available.
City have a much bigger marketing team (we have Keith Brookman and the part time web guy). Thats why they can devote their time going to ANY events that City Community Trust take part in and take pictures and write articles ready made for the local media. Thats why City SEEM to do lots more than us. In reality they probably have four times the community staff but only do twice as many events.
How many times have Rovers appeared in the Evening Post showing players helping reading lessions?, the over 60's club helping to stave off Alzehiemers/ Parkinsons, the get fit for adults club, futsal, the taking kids of the street project AND training session for kids etc etc.
Just because it doesn't get publicity, doesn't mean we aren't working our b*lls off helping the community.

Put "bristol rovers community trust" into Google and the Football Fun Days are in the first result. Who does that though? Most dad's probably can't even spell it, let along Google it! My guess is Rovers don't have the time or the money to go out and attract local kids...shame as the next generation of kids will seemingly be hoovered up (and then I assume spat out) by Bristol Sport ltd...

I believe the funding for the community department and the club itself are completely different. The financial state of the club doesn't impact the community department who get their funds from elsewhere.

Then they should spend the money better....my post wasn't about the amount of money, it was about the fact that City are out there attracting the kids and we have to Google something you'd never actually Google to find our equivalent. I don't care about the financial state of the club. I care that we're rubbish at finding our next local million-pound asset...

My lad goes to a BS7 school and they seem to get visited fairly regularly by people from Rovers, they even bought the (hopefully washed!) play-off trophy to one of the sites. There's no shortage of Bristol Sport branding there though as well in the 'guise of Basketball & Rugby. He's been bought up well though so won't be tempted by the dark side :-) He's been to a couple of the fun days (http://www.bristolroverscommunity.org.uk/sport/football-fun-days/) as well and had a good time, no idea how we found out about it though!

Just had a look at the website, I had no idea that there was so much good stuff being done in the Community. Thanks to those who provided the link.
In the days before t'internet I think that the football camps were promoted by way of articles in the local Bristol/Bath press, and sending info out to schools, and they were always well attended.

I think everyone knows that the club does not promote itself very well. Following relegation, a lot of good staff lost their jobs & those we have retained are stretched but have to be flexible to assist other areas. I am sure at the SC agm, Ken Masters said we lost FL funding. I believe Matt Groves is now part time, so apart from trainees the only full time staff are Pete Aitken & Jon Moody. The media dept consists of Keith (chief general gofer for the FC) & Steve (the p/t web man). Despite being advertised in the programme and the FC,SC & YP sites you are right, not enough people know what the club has to offer. This where we can help by providing information on the forums & face to face with friends/family etc
