Andy Monkhouse insists that he wanted to stay at Bristol Rovers and is “disappointed” that his time at the Memorial Stadium had to come to an end after only 12 months.
Monkhouse, 34, who arrived on a free transfer after being released by Hartlepool United last summer, finally turned down the offer of a new deal last week after failing to thrash out agreeable. The versatile left-sided winger was travelling to and from Leeds – where his wife and young family are based – for the majority of the season, but he insisted: “That really had no bearing on my decision to turn down the offer that was on the table.
“Being so far away from my wife and two kids was difficult for me at the beginning but it was something that became easier to deal with as the season went on.
“I always said that I was willing to do it because I felt there was a great chance of being successful at Rovers and it probably worked out even better than I thought it would.
“I spoke to my family throughout the season and my initial plan was to stay on at the club if we managed to get promoted at the end of it.
“I was willing to do another year at least, but, unfortunately, after speaking to the gaffer on numerous occasions, we couldn’t come to an agreement.
“I wanted to stay and I was ready to come back in July to go again and make a go of pushing the club on in League Two, but it came to a point where I had to make a decision.
“I was disappointed because I really loved my time at the club, but I suppose that is one of those things that happens in football from time-to-time.
“The consolation for me is that we had a great season and it ranks as one of my major career highlights. It was a big disappointment to lose out on the title but to win promotion on that special day at Wembley more than made up for that.
“The way the fans got behind it as the season unfolded was incredible and I feel privileged to have played for such a big club. I will look forward to going back to the Mem at some time in the future if I ever get the chance.”
Monkhouse played an integral role in helping Rovers achieve promotion back to the Football League at the earliest opportunity by playing over 40 times and weighing in with 10 goals.
“I think people maybe thought that I was only signed because I was a friend of the gaffer,” said Monkhouse, who played alongside manager Darrell Clarke at Hartlepool United. “I was also 33 going on 34 and that may have led people to question my motives.
“I’d hope that any people who doubted my reasons for coming to the club will recognise that I did make a worthwhile contribution across the season.
“I probably wasn’t the flying winger that many people were hoping for, but, in the end, I hope I may have changed some people’s opinions of me.”
Rovers are currently well-fancied with bookmakers to secure back-to-back promotions, and Monkhouse added: “They are a great bunch of lads so Rovers will probably be the first result I look for on a Saturday afternoon next season.
“A lot of the lads that are left haven’t played at that level before and it may take them a bit of time to adjust. The big thing they have is momentum and that can be really important for newly-promoted clubs if they can carry it into the new season.”
Monkhouse, meanwhile, has been in talks with several clubs in a bid to secure a deal ahead of the new season and he added: “I’ve got a few days to mull over the options and would anticipate making a decision next week.”

Another good sign that the boss won't be held to ransom over wage demands. There's an offer on the table for what he thinks they're worth and you either take it or move on.

So basically Monky asked for more money and DC said no. I loved Monky and would've like him in the squad for next season purely because of his experience. Good luck to to him in the future!

Or a bad sign that there's just no money, as I can't imagine Monkey wanted mega bucks to stay. The lack of transfer activity is now becoming a worry.

Probably his last contract before he retires so no doubt he was asking for a 2 year deal on big bucks. He needs to start thinking about life after football and he's going to need to back him self with some funds.
Do I blame him? No Do I blame DC? No
This looks like the best deal for both parties IMO

Manager sticks to budget and gets slated. Manager exceeds budget and gets slated. I love it at this time of year...

None of us know the real facts so nobody can really judge whether the present state is good or bad. Personally I find it worrying that existing players couldnt agree terms and the fact we have only seen one non league player come in however I will be patient and see what unfolds as if anyone can get value for money it is DC but I have the feeling that even Yeovile are offering more nowadays!! Interesting times ahead.

Yeovil probably generate more profit than us. They also haven't been at court for 2 seasons.

sounds like it all came down to money or contract length , i like Monkhouse and i'm sure he will get a contract at a league club but its good to see a manager at rovers who sticks to his guns and doesn't just give players whatever they want to come here.

I'm hardly the first to suggest it's a concern we haven't signed anybody, I assume you are prefectly content then that our only signing is a playing from Woking.

Ah my favourite close-season words!
Worry/worrying/worried.(etc)
Why in the name of Jimminy Crisppacket do people worry about something they can have no influence over?

Good luck to to him in the future! unfair assumption. this is just one side of 'the story' and even this side of it is not only not particularly bitter or complaining, and also doesn't give us any info. We simply don't know what the sticking point was. we know 1 fact - Monky was offered a new contract. Therefore the sticking point may have been money but it may have also been other aspects, such a length of contract, goal bonuses, win bonuses, doing coaching badges, travel expenses, time off, etc. We simply don't know. The bottom line is that at least it hasn't been some embarrassing 2 month chase of a player who either [ a ] doesn't want to be here [a.k.a. Constable Contagion], or, [ b ] could bankrupt us [a.k.a. O'Toole Disease].

I'm pleased club is sticking to a wage structure, I just hope the same principle applies to Chris Lines. My worry is other areas of the squad suffer due to him taking up such a large part of budget as some want him signed at any cost.
