I'm doing an article about the JPT [Football Lge Trophy really...] and was wondering what fellow Gasheads think about it.
Call me a bit OCD but I really want to win it! Why? Not sure. Maybe just because it is there, because other teams have done it, or also because our neighbours have won it 3 times!
Does anyone else want to win it / take it seriously?
Our record is actually pretty good, despite 2 final losses. 17th best out of 71 clubs who have played more than 2O games in it. When doing my stats I was surprised how many 'big'-ish names at our level had never even got to the final.
So, should we go balls deep to win it this season? Or forget about it? Or maybe treat it as a minor distraction at first and see what happens?

I'd treat it as a minor distraction and, if we did get further, then take it more seriously. But I'd choose league over paint pot every year.

It may be an OCD thing, but I don't understand how any fan can't want their team to win everything put in front of them. Be it the league or the Gloucester cup. But in reference to the JPT specifically, I think it's something a team like ourselves should always go all out for it, it's a realistic chance at winning something, which at our lowly level is always nice and the cash injection from a final appearance can mean the world to teams like ours.

I agree. Winning games brings confidence and can only help. Out of interest, have any teams reached the final of the JPT and been relegated in the same season?

poll now added. The results of the poll will only be displayed AFTER you vote, but will then stay open for you to see any progress, or even for you to change your vote if you are someone swayed by other opinions, or feel like changing a silly vote.

Out of interest, have any teams reached the final of the JPT and been relegated in the same season? i'm only about 1O years into the stats... but best [or worst] one so far was 2OO5, when Wrexham won it vs Southend. Wrexham were then relegated from Lge 1 and Southend were promoted from Lge 2, via Wembley play-off, to take their place! Luton of course is the 'famous' one. Only time a Lge 2 team beat a Lge 1 team. Won it 3-2 in 2OO9, vs Scunthorpe who were promoted to the Championship a month later via a Wembley play-off victory. Meanwhile Luton were still in the Lge 2 relegation zone and were duly relegated to non-lge! They had a 3O point deduction that season and would have finished 15th if it wasn't for the penalty. They didn't even get to zero points in the lge until after New Year. So the winner started the next season 3 leagues lower than the loser! mad.

Option 2 for me. Not really fussed by it but if we start doing well and getting far then start to take it seriously as another trip to Wembley is always welcome with the added possible bonus of some silverware. A good cup run can also boost the league performances as winning can be a hard habbit to get out of.

Forget about it for me. Whilst we are scratching around in these leagues all focus should be on climbing the ladder. It is a distraction. I would prefer to have a good go at the FA cup instead to meet a big team over playing Rochdale at Wembley. Wembley is all good for the play off final. The feds did it right though by smashing the double! That's ok if you have the squad to do it. We haven't.

It's one of those cups,if you get knocked out it's a Micky Mouse cup,get to the final it's a day out. The club makes money so go for it,like has been stated winning is a good habit, rather the final was at the Millenium though, but that's just me

BTW - the more I look back, the more I think we really should have won in 199O against a team we'd already beaten twice in the lge and had played a staggering 63 previous games that season! They beat us, but came back a week later and lost the Play-Off final.

JPT [FL Trophy] trivia...
Lge 2 teams have only won it 4 times, and 3 of those were to fellow Lge 2 teams.
Lge 1 teams have beaten Lge 2 teams in the final 1O times
Lge 1 teams have beaten fellow Lge 1 teams in the final 18 times
Worst home loss was Wycombe bilge rats in Oct 2OO8, losing 7-O at home to Shrewsbury.
FGR, Telford, Dover, Woking and Leigh RMI have played in it despite NEVER being FL teams.
1987-1988 was the 'how the mighty have fallen' final. Burnley vs Wolves. Both in Tier 4, despite both being ex-Champions of the Football League. It was the first time any Tier 4 teams had got to the final, and had a stonking 8O,OOO+ crowd, which is still the highest ever crowd.
In 199O Tranmere Rovers won the FL trophy but lost the Play-Off Final at Wembley. in 1991 Tranmere Rovers lost the FL trophy but won the Play-Off Final at Wembley.

I'll go for the embrace it and enjoy it option. Cheap tickets to enable the less well off fans to attend games and good opportunities for fringe players. May even get a Wembley day out at the end of it all too.

Blah blah blah for me.
Maybe I'm a bit OCD but I answered the specific question of 'this season'.
If and when we cement ourselves as a L1 club then I'd like to win it. Until we have a couple of seasons back in L1 I could care less.

Normally I'd say go for it but being out of the FA Trophy was definitely a blessing in disguise. I'd much rather a serious go at the FA Cup and try and get a decent team in the 3rd Round.
Option 2 for me.

I know it'll never happen, because of money... but I've always thought that they should scrap the JPT and kick the premier league clubs out if the league cup. Because the league cup is administered by the football league and prem clubs just play weakened teams! Imagine a league cup just for the 3 divisions of the football league, wouldn't that be really competitive?

Option 2 for me. Looking back at it now, I'd go as far as to say it reminded the team how bad losing was. The previous 8 games we'd not lost but drawn too many (5/8). After the defeat we immediately went out and won 4 from 5...it's like a horse that's cantering, then clips a fence and suddenly remembers how to gallop....or something like that...

FGR, Telford, Dover, Woking and Leigh RMI have played in it despite NEVER being FL teams. How did that happen? For 6 consecutive seasons in the early 2OOO's, an amount of Conference teams were invited to play in it. LOTS of teams therefore played. I picked those 6 out as a quirky stat because none of them have EVER been in the FL, whereas all the others have at some point [Southport, R&D, Kiddie, Halifax, Aldershot, Stevenage, Crawley, Exeter etc]
