Result aside....how did we play? Did our players look any good? Or does it go down as just a fitness ex?

From what I heard, the players didn't show any of the fight or determination we saw last season. Let's hope that's because it was a friendly against a non-league side and not because the Sainsburys debacle has affected our team.

The OP's gone a bit OTT in my view bit so have the replies, given the OP is usually a respected poster. I think we all need to chill a bit until the cobbles game.
I guess like the OP our players couldn't be bothered with a meaningless friendly!

Burton Beat Birmingham, Brentford beat Stoke. Under Buckle we beat Burnley in pre season when they'd just been relegated from the prem! Never read too much into pre-season results, all sorts of crazy sh*t happens.

We had a strong team out, against a side we should be better than. Our performance was poor. The results don't matter but the performance does.

Hi 1973, Welcome to the Special Club, no joking only, I can't reply to every poster but replied to RD because he slaughtered me the most!!!! By replying to him I thought I would kill 10 birds with one stone. I do actually respect RD as he tells it as it and I don't care if my posts get hammered as I tell it as I see it at the time.It is a PERSONAL view.
I actually read with interest your input on the forum which is good and you made a fair point to my "pathetic post" which probably means it wasn't so pathetic as it gets people to give their own personal views which is what the forum is all about. It is a special club which you often need Rhino skin for but EVERY poster is part of that Special club.
I can see that I did totally ignore the point you rightly made about looking at other results on the day. It is a good point. My feeling is that I just don't have the time to look at other results because then I have to look at other facts such as "What type of team did they put out"or "Had they played another friendly that day or the day before". What worried me is that we played what should have been a good enough team to play Cheltenham off the park but it didn't happen and I will tell you why it worries me.
For the first season in many I have great faith in the Manager but probably the least faith I have ever had in the backing he is being given. For the first season in many I really haven't a clue as to how good we actually are. We could finish in the top 3,the top 10 or the bottom 10 - there are too many unknowns at this level. I just hope that yesterdays performance or lack of it is a one off because if we are to have a successful season which IMO would be anywhere in thye Top 10 then we are going to need as many of the unknowns to prove to be positive.ie Will Mildenhall recover the form that made him one of the top keepers in League 2 before? Will Puddy be able to step up? Will Leadbitter be like Smith and continue his improvement? Can Mansells legs carry him through a tough season back in the League? Can Gosling, Harrison, Taylor, Ollie Clark, Blissett perform consistently at this level? Will Easter be fit and be a 15 goal a season man? Will we sign three more players before the season start whether it be loans or permanent? DC says we will make one more permanent and 2 loans ..well I hope Bodin isn't considered to be the permanent one as in my mind a 3 month contract is a loan so still expecting a permanent winger of striker to arrive.
As regards your curiosity as to which Amateur clubs I played for..well firstly let me make it clear that I do not consider any relevance in either standard one has played at or even whether one has played at all, everyone is capable of giving their views and by the very fact that they watch the game they have an idea as to what they would like to see and what they expect- to some the result is the be all and end all and in football today that is true but others like to be entertained as their first preference.
Personally my football was no great shakes-unfortunately. Played in quite a few local Leagues both Saturday and Sundays, did have an unsuccessful trial at Rovers many many moons ago but played till I was 46 and managed to play over 1200 amateur games due mainly to good luck with injuries and the goodwill of colleagues who were happy to put up with me in goal!! Fishponds Old boys, Aztecs, St Joseph, Roman Glass, BAC Aces, Shireway Sports, Venture Sports, Chasers,Compton Rovers,NFU,The Star and my favourite of all was playing for North Stand Rovers under John Kayes Management which was as would be expected mainly Gasheads but the odd shithead thrown in!!! I am sure I have forgotten a few due to old age!! I would always consider Fishponds Old Boys to be MY team as even now I am still in the top 25 for appearances and I last played for them about 20 tears ago!!
Anyway 1973 welcome to the Special Club!!!!

My post has done what it was intended to which was to get people discussing the FOOTBALL again after months of off the field boredom!! Great input from everybody whether you agreed with all, some or none of my comments!!! Particularly interesting to hear the views of those who did go yesterday. Roll on two weeks time when hopefully we will have three points on the board and lots of positives to take through the winter. Where has the summer gone!!

Perhaps the over reaction is because we've had bugger all to talk about before today? Quiet pre season. Comfortably beating the local sides and giving Reading a good game.
