H&S would not allow it, nice idea but the stupid rules we all have to work under pretty much wont allow any non trade workers mooching about the place. Bath City do it every summer, so I would imagine it is possible, as long as you're sensible.

Legislation becomes a problem when people are scared of it. It also becomes a useful excuse for not doing something. It is not obstructive at all as long as people understand it. HnS actually makes it possible for fans to go and help out rather than the other way around.

I was thinking more of gutter clearing and roof work but painting should be ok, with hard hats and goggles, oh and gloves and a mask. I bow to your knowledge of the Health and safety executive.

Thanks Newmarket. There will be plenty of odd jobs up there that wouldn't need instructions or special equipment anyway.

I always think that Health and Safety is just the go to phrase used in businesses when the Truth Translator would read "We can't be bothered" or "It's just how we run things and we want you to accept that". I was tempted to ask to see the risk assessment when I was told on a Great Western train that I wasn't allowed to refuse a paper bag to carry my pre-packed sandwich, purchased from the buffet car, back to my seat because "Health and Safety". Most people don't even attempt to offer anything more illuminating than those three words.

I'd be quite happy to donate She Who Casts No Shadow for a whole weekend to help with the painting.
Hell, thinking about it, she can stay for a couple of months !

In other words what a reasonable person would do. What a lot of people do is confuse health and safety with public liability. If we were to paint the ground then the club could be liable under section 3 of the 1974 Health and safety act, the same as any contractor, delivery or any one who is doing their job by delivering or otherwise to the club.

Another great idea. I'm sure 10 or so people would volunteer to spend a few days up there painting, clearing gutters etc. But no. This has been mooted before and you would think enough people could be got together but.... there are issues with insurances etc ladders and an old football stadium don't mix well. Im sure there would be ways around this though, disclaimers maybe? That's an excuse, lots of lower league clubs organise working parties during the close season at both their stadia and training grounds.

Not quite but let's not bore everyone with definitions and meanings anyway. That's what people who hide behind SHE do!

It's a great idea, but as with other good ideas that are occasionally floated I just can't see our mostly apathetic supporters getting off their asses, although Hugo's idea for the FFSC to get involved does seem like more of a goer.
I remember back in the summer of '86 when we moved to Twerton, me and a bunch of similar aged mates, most of us 12 or 13, spent a couple of weeks riding our BMX's from Kingswood along the cycle track to Bath and helping the club, we painted the posts holding up the roofs and the stand and carried breeze blocks to help make the away end bigger, all we got was a soft drink at lunch time, even had to take our own sandwiches, but it was brilliant fun for a 12 year old fan in the summer holidays.

Gosh this thread went off topic a bit didn't it! I thought the "Open Day" was a big success i was in the dribuild for over 3 hours and sat watching as a huge queue formed to meet the players/DC and all i could see were happy excited faces enjoying the day - despite the weather which was awful! Lots of folk signing up for the SC and a rally good atmosphere with the shop doing good trade I had a lengthy detailed chat with DC (well actually he talked one hell of a lot and i listened ) for over half an hour! His passion is outstanding! Also chatted with Barry and i respect both men for taking the time to chat freely I then had a few red wines too many with a certain GregsGas! so its a bit of a blurr after that - Gotta say well done to everyone at the club for their time and effort on a lousy day and even bigger well done to those supporters who turned up with smiling faces it was a pleasure to see and i met some brilliant Gasheads! A mate of mine was signed up for a get back to work scheme and was posted to the mem during the summer.
He spent most the week at the general manager's house turfing his lawn!
He's got trades in most things, said the rest of the time they had him washing down the terraces!
