We're not finished, but I think we'll struggle to bring players in purely because from the outside it seems DC doesn't have much to work with.

Nothing's been mentioned on here about a Lines/Mansell fall out, although nothing seems to have also been said anywhere why Lines was missing on Tuesday, assuming he didn't pick up an injury on Saturday it seems an odd one to rest our star midfield player after just one game?
Back to the OP, I'd take DC's comments about no more signings with a pinch of salt!

Re. Lines/Manse, more 82ers post comments on rovers stuff than gasheads, so id ignore EP comments as usual.

Hopefully Mansell has given Lines a dig telling him to stop acting the billy big bollocks and put a foot in.

People miss the point with Lines. They see him as this creative midfielder who is 'non droppable' as he can change a game. If he wasn't Bristolian you'd be calling him the next Andy Bond
The good spell he had with us, and it was a brief spell, was because of all the dirty work that Campbell would do.
Lines is neither creative or someone who can change a game. In the main his set pieces are poor. Yes we can all pick out the pin-point cross that led to a goal (hinton against Fulham or at Halifax last season). But lets be honest how many goals does he create. We have players in the team who can deliver a better dead ball but he showed last week and in games last season that he believes he should take them all. I have always believed his best position is further forward. He has pace, can certainly hit a ball and is big enough to head it. In midfield you need players like Mansell, Clarker and Sinclair. Lines isn't and never will be that type of player
But my biggest gripe is that he doesn't do the dirty and hard stuff at all. Track back, tackle, put a foot in, take one for the team. he is too light weight and has NEVER controlled a midfield, even in the conference last season. If he loses the ball he leaves it for someone else to do the work for him. In a nutshell he is overated and lazy and I was delighted he didn't play Tuesday and I will be even happier if he doesn't play tomorrow.
Signing Lines was a mistake, one I hope DC doesn't live to regret.

lines played very well during the run in last season, was creative and passed the ball very well,,,he had a poor game v northampton,,maybe just a bit early writing him off as a waste of money? i do agree that he shouldnt take every set piece as brown mansell and gosling take good dead ball kicks

i know you only go the occasional match but where do you think we will finish in the league as things stand? It's a bit early to answer that I think mate. I'm just reacting to some of DC's comments about believing in ourselves more and that Northampton had experienced players. The fact is the whole league is like that and our players are going to have to learn to compete at this level pretty quickly. Having someone to tell them what to do which is, in effect, what I am asking for isn't rocket science. DC took the captaincy off Parkes because he obviously didn't think he was suited to that sort of role, and many of the others are too inexperienced at this level. We really need to hit the ground running, as I've said before. The danger is that without that "old head" we could soon find ourselves floundering in the wrong half of the table. I'll certainly have a better idea of how I think we will cope when I go to Luton on Tuesday, and I've also booked a day off for the Orient game two weeks on Saturday.

its just my opinion but i think someone who gets to write a blog about rovers should be someone that goes to virtually every game. what was your own opinion on the northampton game?

The Post invited people to do a blog a couple of years ago and I volunteered. I am a professional writer but I don't get paid for this, I do it for love of Rovers. It's time consuming and sometimes downright difficult to come up with fresh ideas, but some people like it, though obviously not present company. I don't see why there should be any restrictions on who writes a blog, though if it is about Rovers it helps if you know something about the subject. I don't believe you have to go to EVERY game to give a general opinion, but I can call on 40 years as a sports writer covering the likes of Swansea, Wrexham, Cardiff, Stoke and Port Vale and use that experience to formulate an opinion. I read plenty about the Northampton game and saw the woeful defending that led to their goal while hearing about the few chances we created. We were better on Tuesday apparently but still managed to concede almost immediately after equalising. It's not as if I'm having a go, I'm just suggesting ways things might be better. This piece was based on what happened at Wrexham when they were struggling in the bottom division. Their players were all young and pretty talented but lacked experience. They brought in Malcolm Crosby on loan who, though not a player likely to pull many trees up, knew how to influence and guide those around him and put in a foot when it was needed, slow things down when they were ahead and generally "manage" a game. From having struggled to win games they won about three on the trot. I think Rovers could do with someone of that nature, that's all. Obviously some people on here just want to have a go because "I don't go to games". When I lived in Bristol just over a year ago I got to lots of games. Now, through circumstance, I live in London and it's not so easy. I will, though, be at Luton and Orient so may see you there. I'm normally with London Gas these days. At the end of the day all a blog is meant to be is an opinion that people can debate. Steve K could write one, sure. His entries on here tend to be straight down the line verdicts on matches with ratings of the players, which is different to the way I write. Martin Bull does things differently again in his blog. We don't tend to agree on many things but I respect his right to say what he does. UP THE GAS!

I agree about the older heads. Our older heads are Mildenhall, McChrystal, Mansell and Easter, who could represent the spine of the team. The problem is that Mildy is out of form and seems a bit anxious, McChrystal and Mansell injured and Easter not yet established as a regular starter, so in those first two games we quite possibly did lack leaders on the pitch. I don't think now is the time to panic, but Mansell returning, in particular, would give us a big lift.
And Nick, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that the criticism of you on this thread for not going to all the games is a bit lazy. I think you made some very valid points in that article. Monkhouse is a big miss for us, because he played the game with an air of calmness that only a player who truly knows the game can. This has a really good influence on those around him, and is just as valuable as Mcchrystal's quiet organisational skills, or Mansell's drive and encouragement. It is tricky to get the right pieces into the jigsaw, and it is a different jigsaw from last year, but I trust DC to be able to do it as many of the pieces are already in place, in my opinion.

Clubs invariably rest star players for League Cup ties. Nothing unusual there. If they have had a tiff then they're experienced enough to brush it aside and man up for the next game.
