This was nothing short of a disaster almost from the first minute to the last. Newport fans sang "Can we play you everyweek" and i think nearly every team in the division will be looking forward to a trip to the Mem based on our home record. The only consolation is that we have a pretty brilliant away record or else DC would be in a very difficult position. Each of Newport's goals were down to rank poor defending by individuals and yet again we failed to take a number of good chances. The worse thing is that the substitutes are failing to impress enough to make you think they can do any better and based on what i have seen so far the away record is more likely to get worse than the home record get better. In truth we made Newport look a lot better than they actually were and handed them their goals on a plate as well as too often over doing things on the ball.
Nicholls 3 I didn't think it was possible to concede a worse goal than Mildenhalls blunder against Eastleigh last year but Nicholls managed to top it with an almighty blunder when he somehow managed to drop the ball behind him when it appeared to be safely in his hands leaving the Newport player the easy task of rolling the ball over the line. Thought he should have done better on the last goal as well.
Leadbitter 7 MOM A good attacking display but sometimes he does overdo the step overs and fails to get a quality cross in early enough but did cause the most problems for Newport..
Lockyer 6 For me not at his best but was hardly surprising as Tom Parkes left him isolated far too often
Parkes 1 Terrible from the moment he needlessly headed the ball into his own net to the wild shot at the end that was close to ending up at Southmead Hospital. He was also badly at fault for the third goal when hesistancy allowed the ball to bounce and this was far from the only errors he made today. Unlucky with the header that hit the bar but we can only hope that McCrystal is fit for Friday but otherwise surely James Clarke should be reinstated.
Brown 7 A good performance both defensively and attacking particularly first half where he regularly got past the full back and put decent balls in.
Mansell 4 Too many wayward passes and gave the Newport players too much room in midfield.
Sinclair 5 Unlucky not to score with a superb run in the first half but overall the partnership with Mansell was very much second best in the battle for midfield supremacy. Worked hard as always but lacked the creativity needed to open up the opposition and far too much went sideways or backwards.
Bodin 6 Goal of the season with a tremendous long range Volley that gave the Newport goalkeeper no chance at all.Had other good moments particularly in the first half but faded badly in the second half.
Gosling 6.5 Had a very good first half ,always prompting and looking for a creative pass but faded second half.
Easter 6 Showed lots of skill in holding the ball and was unlucky when he superbly controlled a through ball in the first half but was too close to the keeper who saved and Taylor failed miserably to get the rebound on target.
Taylor 5 For me a very mixed game and in truth he does miss a lot of good chances but still looks the most likely to score.
Subs Mantano 6 Showed some good control and touches and does at least look a creative player however please can somebody tell me where he was supposed to be playing. I thought he was a winger but DC seems to send him on with instructions to play inside.
Lines 5 Some good passes and Corners but for me he starts too deep and that very much restricts his usefulness.
Harrison 4 Didn't really do anything.
DC Not convinced that he has any ideal how to improve on this poor home record as although he says it how it is as regards the performance he must take his proportion of the blame for the results. The build up is far too slow and it is his job to sort it out.
Ref 5 Missed far too much to be considered good.
Crowd 4 Decent numbers but didn't really get behind the team.
So where do we go from here? DC really has a few decisions to make now and one is whether to reinstall Mildenhall as No 1 but he is in a very difficult position having made it clear that Mildenhall is not really in his thoughts. If McCrystal is not fit for Friday then he may have to recall Clarke as Parkes is looking so sluggish that he must be replaced. Midfield is another department that is looking far from impressive as regards creativity but can he afford to play Lines in an away game where we stand to be overun without the workrate of Mansell or Sinclair.
This is almost one of the worse home starts we have had and this is so frustrating following on from impressive away performances. 1 point out of six in the last week is far from good enough.

I will be amazed if nicholls and parkes start Friday after there gaffs!! I thnk not having a decent target man type is the main reason our build ups are slow especially at home where opponents arnt under pressure from the crowd to push forward. bottom line for me though is 3 of the goals were total gifts caused by stupid mistakes without them we would just be frustrated by a home draw.

I disagree that this was a disaster from the first minute. I thought we played well in the first half despite not taking our chances. Second half we were poor but we should have had enough quality on the pitch to get a draw.
Individual mistakes at both ends let us down today rather than the general standard of play.

Continually misses chances by shooting wide of the post nearest to him. Never gets a shot across the keeper or between the posts for that matter. He does get in the right positions, that his is job, unfortunately his scoring rate to chances is absolutely dire and how you can defend that is totally beyond me. At least you could not blame Blissett for todays debacle, oh hang on though he was on the bench so you could probably cite that as a reason for Taylors indifferent performance.

Well, the way its going by Christmas Taylors apostles will be outnumbered by the rest of us.
Taylor contributes very little, and his apologists always resort to his off the ball work. What off the ball work? The guy is a non league player, and not a very good one at that. He is certainly not a striker. If he must be played he should play behind the front two. He offers no aerial ability with the ball out of defence, and certainly cannot hold the ball played out on the ground.
As for our keeper, I suggest we send him back to Wigan, and reinstate our giant keeper from Port Vale, (forgotten his name).
With regard to DC, he has to pick a side and basically stick with it. Even after 18 months, DC still doesn't seem to know his best team. That is just not good enough.

I was a massive fan of Taylor last season but acknowledged that he needed to improve to make the step up a division. I don't think he has done.

He used to have a high work rate which partly made up for his misses in front of goal. Now he doesn't even put the effort in and seeing him jog around whilst staying 3 or 4 metres from the action is taking away the pleasure of watching rovers. Very poor again today. Disagree with Padstow about though, I'd rather we had Dick Plumb up front !!

Fair enough, he misses too many guilt edged chances but don't see how you can say he doesn't try.

People were raving about Taylor the other week after scoring 5 in 5, funny how opinions change so quickly after a heavy defeat!
His flicked header which went marginally wide was unlucky as he did well to get in front of his defender. He probably should of scored in the first half but why is no one moaning about Easter slicing one wide and then taking an extra touch before rolling it into the on rushing keeper? (Which resulted in Taylor's chance)
He wasn't at his best today but calling him a poor non league striker is a joke. He will finish as our top scorer this season - like he did last year, even if he does miss a bucket load because he gets himself into far better positions than the others.
Doesn't deserve the stick he gets!

I can't quite make out what I feel about today. I am gutted by the result but I was interested to hear so many on the radio say that the problem lies up front rather than at the back. We all saw Nichols make a massive blunder but I think he has been good for us on the whole and I wouldn't drop him after today. He will know more than most he *ed up. As for Matteeeee I think he works hard and his positional play is good but he misses too many and this will cost us. He needs a proper finisher beside him. What I can't work out is Tom Parkes. Last season he was, rightly, player of the season but this time round he looks slow and unfit. He can't have become a bad player so what has happened? He cannot play on Friday on current form and fitness.

Don't know how your can blame Matty for that today when he had the biggest waste of our budget next to him walking around like the old crock he is. Get rid of Easter and replace him with somebody who cares about the club. He is just here for the Pension pay cheque and Parkes ? has he had a good game in the last 12 months ? Na to slow and to much Timber between his ears

Is that the "Waste of budget" who set up Bodin with an excellent header and then controlled a through ball excellently to shoot and rebound to Matty who missed the open goal. In all honesty in the last six games both have a reasonable goal return as does Bodin. Our real problem is that our midfield lacks real quality in football terms.

The way I saw the game today is we were far too slow in our build up and too many balls went sideways or backwards in midfield.
It seemed the only player in midfield looking forward with the ball at their feet was gosling with a few good balls into Easter in the first half.
The team is screaming out for someone to run at teams with the ball the way leadbitter did today. Deserved MOTM today I agree.
Lines did it last season but he's dropped so deep this season that there isn't space for him to run into ahead of him.
Thanks for the write up Steve!
