The team was founded in 1998, following a merger between the Bristol Rovers girls' teams and Welsh side Cable-Tel L.F.C.. This merger came about as Bristol Rovers only had girls teams up to the under 16 age group level, so when girls reached the age of 16 they were forced to leave the club. The merger with Cable-Tel meant that Bristol Rovers had a senior squad, and more importantly it gave them a place in the South West Combination league, only two levels below the top flight of women's football in England. This new merged team took the name Bristol Rovers W.F.C. and played their home games at The Beeches, the training ground and administrative offices of Bristol Rovers, located in Brislington. That was a quick reply tbh I made the comment in jest. Anyway the bottom line is whatever we think of it the name change is for the good of the womens team, but they can't change their history whatever they call themselves.
I knew that it was in jest but it gave me the opportunity to share the history. We were forced to cut their funding years ago and fortunately Filton College were willing to carry on the financing of the team. They have been victims of their own success punching way above the level of funding which the college were able to provide. Hopefully Steve Lansdown will be able to give them the funding that they need so that Bristol has a top flight Womens football team.

I have merged oldsage's thread with the existing one as the topic is exactly the same. Have also altered title to make it clearer. Oldsage please don't feel discouraged from posting, you are most welcome!

I watched Frankfurt v Bristol Sport (Women's Soccer Section) this year in Frankfurt. I was rooting for the Germs to win. I just cannot support any Bristol team that wears Red.

You didn't support Rovers during our magnificent promotion year 73/74 then? At Brighton we couldn't wear them due to those watching in black and white on the box as our red and white stripes clashed with Brightons blue and white stripes and wore Brightons away strip instead.

Didn't know that , that was 8-2 game,i went to most away games that season starting at Bournemouth can't recall a red and white strip, must have blocked it out. Plus we played in the quarters more away then
