Mildenhall Preston
Leadbitter Brown Lockyer McChrystal Parkes Greenslade
Clarke Mansell Sinclair Monkhouse Gosling Thomas
White Taylor Brunt Harrison Lucas Ward-Baptiste
If we were playing 4-4-2 we'd have only Lockyer to cover right back and no-one senior to cover left back. Playing 3-5-2 we look short in midfield. Without question, we are short on numbers with only 15 senior players (those in italics are first year scholars). Add into that questions over fitness of Brunt and attitude of Ellis and the squad, as it stands looks painfully threadbare. I would like us to recruit, at the very least, another centre back, a left sided wing-back, a centre midfielder and a striker, but reading Darrel's comments it seems unlikely we will see this many new arrivals. I think we have some decent players, but I think we are short of what it will take to challenge, mainly due to our lack of numbers. It's possible Clarke could use the loan market to strengthen some areas. What do you think we need to make a serious challenge? Also, let me know if I've missed anyone from the squad.

Great post and I totally agree. We also need a creative player with a good turn of pace

I know it isn't ideal but apparently Leadbitter can cover anywhere across the back 4 so his versatility could be cruical. If we can dd Turley too then I would be happy with the defence.
Midfield for me is where we do look very short still. Playing this 3-5-2/5-3-2 that we have in pre-season means I feel we need more options in centre midfield and a natural pacey wide player is still a must.
I am fairly happy with the strikng options and Clarke has also said he has a loan deal lined up for another man up top if needs be.
I think we are slowly starting to get there with the quality side of things, still not quite there on quantity. A couple of injuries and we could really suffer.

Said the same last season. Whilst the playing staff are obviously important, there is another large % that is made up of personal/collective qualities. The best players do not triumph if they lack in personal qualities, likewise the best team cannot win if the collective qualities aren't right. We went down last year. Not because we had the worst players imo. If anything, we had a fairly decent squad of players barring injuries. There were too many other things wrong which led to our downfall. So this season DC needs to inject all the good stuff that was missing from most of our team last season. If he does that correctly, the formation and tactics and players become slightly less important.

I think Monkhouse and Gosling are pretty creative. If we play a 3 man midfield like at Glos then I imagine one of those 2, Monkhouse I imagine, will play just ahead of Mansell and Sinclair. Leaving Clarke and Gosling as backup. That is ok in terms of numbers in there. Obviously we will need another winger if we play a 4 man midfield.
If Leadbitter can cover at left wing back and Lockyer or Sinclair on the right then Turley is a must sign with only 3 recognisable centre half's in the squad.
I think DC will bring in a couple of loanees at some point to give us some depth.
We are low on numbers certainly but it's not panic stations time just yet!

If we are going for a back five we need at least two more defenders. I still think we need a creative midfielder and a senior striker too

Blomey,
Seems like we are agreeing lol. A couple of creative players and the possibility of loans could see us do ok.

In my opinion we need a creative CAM to play in the hole. We currently have been playing Gosling and Monkhouse there, both of whom are naturally wingers. Gosling said to us yesterday that he's changing his game to primarily be a CAM, but for me we need another natural CAM, someone around 24/25 years old who can create chances and score goals. Obviously that's easy to say, because finding a player good enough won't be easy, but in my opinion that's where we need to strengthen.
I'd also like another striker. Now we have Monkhouse (who is taller than Brunt, may I add), I think we are okay for target men, as he can play up front too. I would like a loanee striker - Someone quick and technical who can come off the bench and burst past defenders. There are plenty of loanees out there on the cheap.
People say we need another winger. Perhaps, but not if we are playing 3-5-2. Darrell said that he will be playing 4-4-2 too, and that we are just practising this new formation for flexibility. If we do play 4-4-2, then we only have two wingers (Monks and Gos). A loanee winger could be the answer here.
So, for me. Sign a natural CAM, loan a pacey striker and loan a pacey winger.

I saw I made the mistake but could not be arsed editing. I access the forum on my phone as the Mrs used the laptop for her photography. I end up using I's instead of O's a lot. I think it shows a bit of humanity in allowing the mistakes.
