I think the mixture of all seater stadiums and the changing demographic of fans has combined to adversely affect the atmosphere at a lot of clubs.
I really feel sorry for younger fans that have never experienced footy on a packed terrace in the 70/80's. Absolutely incomparable to today's experience. You're right, the atmosphere at AG hasn't been good for a while. The last time I can remember a really exceptional atmosphere was our play off games against Palace a few years back.
Hopefully after the redevelopment is finished the singers will once again congregate in the same area. We do have a number of fans that make an effort to bring the atmosphere back, and Crystal Palace are a very good example of what can be achieved.
Thanks for not banning me after my first post. I managed to last a few years on the old Rovers forum, and even ended up making a few cyber fwends
Football has changed a lot since the 70s and 80s Kids won't know those days so won't miss it like the older fans do. Before long all grounds will be full of middle age people who have only known seats and the more "modern" atmosphere of today. Which is a shame, everyone should have had the chance (at least once) to experience the massive explosion of emotion while stood on a packed terrace as a goal goes in, and then trying to figure out why your now stood 30ft from where you were before the goal went in, and then climbing up the packed terrace to get back to your mates

And that was from just going to the bogs on a night game at Twerton, and trying to take a water in the pitch black as there was no lights! The pie was always a bonus

It's even frowned upon to water in the pocket of the bloke in front of you these days, political correctness gone mad!
My old man used to take me and my two brothers into the East End with three wooden stools for us to stand on. Imagine trying to get them through the turnstiles nowadays.
And yes, who can forget the surges when your team scored. I don't miss the open air bogs though.

Had to drive along Luckwell Rd this morning and the stand being constructed totally dominates the skyline. It does look a bit odd as you can't see any of the other stands. It is huge!

Let's just hope we're not calling this the 'good old days' in 4-5 years time....

You can see the new stand as you come down Bridge Valley road,it is very big and doesn't fit in with the other stands maybe the long term plan is to make them as high as the new stand ?. I think that the main problem for city is car parking,I have heard that there are special football buses going there from various parts of the city now,if true I think its a good idea.

The biggest problem both clubs have is getting people to turn up!
Too many Premier League Television supporters in Bristol or are they just not interested?
Still looking for the missing Wembley 25,000!!!

Still looking for the missing Wembley 25,000!!! To many alternatives now, there was a time when your local football match was the only show in town, times have changed. The main reason for choosing to go to a live game over watching a match on TV is the atmosphere, once that goes it will only be people going through habit, which isn't good for the future.

Yep, Abus run buses to AG on matchday. £1 return from Brislington for ST holders! Apparently Brighton have a scheme whereby ST holders get free bus and train rides to the ground. I would say a good idea for Bristol, but if First were running it I'd probably never get to see kick off.

The idea in Bristol seems to be to encourage people to use public transport,if that's going to happen they need to put buses on at times that they are needed to destinations like football stadiums.

Well, it's Bristol, so they'll probably make some artists impressions to keep everybody happy for a while then shelve it.

Just going off on a bit of a tangent here, but whilst we are on the subject of terracing/80's etc, there's something that has bugged me for years. I remember going to a derby game 'over there' (was a bit watered tbh) in the late 80's, poss early 90's which I think we Won. We were crammed in like sardines in the away end and there was a minutes silence before the game, I think for a City player who died in a car crash. The minutes silence was being perfectly observed by all, when one of that lot shouted 'Gas B'stards' from the Dolman Stand....obviously this was met by a reaction from our fans and I remember we were then condemned for so called disrespecting the minutes silence....can anyone remember this if so what was the date? Not sure if these are two separate events. I recall the car crash minute silence quite well. It was March 1990 and the player was Dean Horrix who had signed the week before. His death was announced during our home game with Leyton Orient as he died overnight. The silence was impeccably held (the phrase hear a pin drop was never more apt). We had played City in the Autumn so I think the Ashton Gate one was a few years later. Maybe a former player or director.

The Mem is a shitehole and needs to go. The UWE or any other ground has to be an improvement. I haven't looked at AG because it doesn't interest me but there is something nice about 4 separate stands but I'm certain an atmosphere can be generated in any shape of ground if you have the right fans in it. AG has had a reported problem with atmosphere for a long time. I'm not sure if that's anything to do with its design. Speak to any sh!thead and they will tell you the lack of atmosphere is down to the acoustics of the stands, the only stand that had any atmosphere was the east end because it was so low(nothing to do with the fact it housed the away fans...) Also nothing to do with the fact the Sh1!heads don't make any atmosphere themselves mind... Gaz I'm going to have to disagree with you I'm afraid , the sh** generate a great atmosphere when their team of super stars are losing and they begin slagging their own players off ,Then if it's not at their own players they sing about how we are not their rivals anymore !!!!!!!! UTG !!!!!

Still looking for the missing Wembley 25,000!!! Unfortunately I'm afraid there are far too many premier league plastics in Bristol. I said on another thread the other day that when my daughter goes to school and does p.e she wears her rovers shirt and all the other kids laugh and say how bad rovers are and how good Arsenal , utd , Chelsea , Liverpool etc are. It has always made me so ***g mad as we have local clubs in Bristol screaming out for support! To be fair I will always hold more respect for a young un wearing a s****y shirt than any premier league shirt! Support your local team Ffs !

I look forward to the day when both Bristol clubs are in the prem......these 'neutral' fans in their Liverpool and man utd shirts suddenly become the enemy and open to abuse...not so comfortable for them walking around suddenly ...watch the shirts vanish.

See how sanitised the Bristol Sport (Football section) has become. Short arses like me can still take orange boxes into the Blackthorn to stand on and you might as well water in the pocket of the guy in front, as the bogs are less sanitary. Oh and Surges.......we got surges!

I remember a game at the gate and again we were packed on open terrace, and from the Dolman they started throwing coins, despite being dangerous the plod did absolutely nothing. My brother was happy though he picked up more money than the admission charge
