It's a tricky balance. I hope we don't drop the approach that has clearly worked well just because we have some financial clout and momentum. Not pretending you can play with the big money boys seems key to building a sustainable club over the long term. I think that's what our new owners want and so do I. But I hope sensible contract discussions are well advanced given its nearly end of season as we need to keep the core of this squad at a sensible cost Yes, lets take Matty as an example and guess that he is on £1k a week at the moment. If as has been suggested he is being offered £3k a week and a 3 year deal at Hearts, what would you stay for? The hassle of moving away from friends etc. personally I'd still be looking for £2k and a two year deal minimum...if I didn't love Rovers...

I'm probably being naive but we simply can't afford to treble somebodies wages for a long period of time just because they have a better offer, unless we are trebling our income in a sustainable way. But the screwed economics that is football means a gamble on paying somebody an extra £100k to £200k is all made good if they then sell for £500k. So its tough call at an individual level even before you consider fairness / equity across the squad, something that has to be key to the "all in this together" mentality DC has created. So small steps would be my view, but not a retain at any cost. And no one good player paid many times more than any other

I know we're not in the 1st div yet and we might not make it there this year anyway, but does anyone know roughly what sort of income a div 1 club gets from tv rights and from grants etc. Basically what the income is without matchday tickets and bars/ food etc. I have no idea but I'd imagine there is quite a large jump between 1st and 2nd division.

I dont have figures but I do remember looking at 82's 14/15 accounts not long ago and was struck by how much less they got from rights when they were in league 1 vs what I expected. Certainly not enough to treble wage bill! Their bigger income boost vs ours was match day sales and stadium related. Hence importance of stadium . . .

I do not think the difference is that much. But the Deloitte annual football report shows that in 13/14 the Div 1 wage bills were more than double that of Div 2!

Can anybody really imagine MT's already signed for Hearts the way he's been playing recently?

I'd guess promotion would boost turnover by £1m as gates would surely increase by at least another 1,000 a match? The big unknown is how much, if anything, the Al-Q's would want to boost our turnover, if they felt another promotion was a possibility next season?

Agree. But £20 ave income per head (doubt it's that high) x 1,000 new gasheads x 25 home games still only £500k of income. That's nearly 3 scots prem Mattys on £3k per week or 9 league 2 Mattys on £1k per week.
Have mixed feelings on pumping in big Jordanian cash, and indications seem to be he isn't going to go mad with his lolly. I laughed out loud when city wanted to sign that nobody for £9m or whatever it was. That's no way to build a team, and I think even they realised that eventually

MT has done very well at conference and league two level ,there is no guarantee that he can score the same amount in league one . Even the same wage for example £1000 /week could be offset by a £1000 goal bonus ,£700 assist bonus and £300 if any team mate scores (without his assist) and £500 if the team keeps a clean sheet ,with the obligatory £500 win bonus.
A four nil win could for example see him pick up £1000 basic + £2000 for two goals + £700 for an assist + £300 for a team mate scoring with no assist + £500 clean sheet + £500 win bonus. = £5000
A two nil defeat could see him pick up the basic £1000
All just pondering ,the two parties agents and legal teams will decide regardless of what's scrawled here !

So how many do people guess he'll finish with? Earlier in the season I guessed 23 but I think he's gonna beat that now, so I'm gonna change mine to 26, 4 more goals in our final 8 games possible play-off goals as well. he scored 2 in the 3 PO games last season, and really stuck the knife into his former employers.

If the rumours are true and he is off to Hearts it will be a big loss for us - he really has come on a long way this season and i reckon he could do a good job at 1st division level. One things for sure and that is that we will have dropped a real clanger if he ends up going for nowt, something that we managed to prevent happening with all of our previous top scorers for as long as I can remember. catch 22 surely. what if we had stayed 17th? we'd be loving the fact that most of the team are out of contract at the end of the season. Not many people confidently thought we'd be pushing for auto promotion, or that about 5 players with no FL experience would do well. MT has clearly exceeded everyone's expectations, especially people who saw him slightly struggle in non-lge. if MT goes for nothing it will have to be put down to collateral damage as part of a generally clever policy of short term contracts and performance related bonuses - the savings we may have made over the last 2 years will have to 'pay for' the loss of income from MT if that happens. we offered Scott bevan a 3 year contract. and matt gill at the age of 31. and don't even start me off on virgo, kenneth, etc. a complete joke... BUT if they'd been brilliant we would have loved it. glad we had Carayol on a contract, but some fans thought he was rubbish. The person who, for example, ties Suarez up to a cheap 5 year deal at the age of 22 is labelled a genius. But what about the 100 other would-be suarez's who had a similar deal but never made it and just sucked the accounts dry (not necessarily through any fault of their own...)

Kee has 5 in the last 10, but is 5 behind taylor at the mo.

Not sure what level Vardy was playing at before he joined North Premier side Halifax but his record after joining them was similar to MT's, although Vardy went straight from then Conference side Fleetwood to Leicester for a £1m transfer fee, we could potentially lose MT on a free!
2010–2011 FC Halifax Town 37 Games(27) Goals 2011–2012 Fleetwood Town 36 (31) 2012– Leicester City 128 (44)

I felt a bit sorry for Taylor against Cambridge, we sang songs about Gaffney, mildly, DC, Wael, but not Taylor yet he's our biggest asset Not unless I missed it, I don't think so as I was slumming it in the blackthorn for a change. ;-) A shame, but weirdly there were no songs for Lambert either.
