PAUL Hurst wants Grimsby Town to be 'party poopers' and ruin Bristol Rovers' big day tomorrow. The Mariners are preparing to take centre stage as they kick-off the first Conference Premier game of the season, at the Memorial Stadium (12.45pm). And with Darrell Clarke's side looking to begin a 'bright new era' following their relegation from the Football League, Hurst wants his side to crash the party. "We're not going down there just to be Bristol Rovers' guests tomorrow – we want to be the unwanted guests," he told the Telegraph. "There's been a lot of talk about the start of a bright new era at Bristol and getting rid of all the doom and gloom down there. Well, we all know that this football club has had to endure that for a few years now. "We know first-hand what it's like, so we want go down there and try and upset their big day, and ruin their party." He continued: "There is a bit of pressure on them, and we'll see whether that works in our favour tomorrow. "They're many people's favourites for the league title and the expectation on them is massive – similar to how it was when this club came out of the league. "They'll probably have the biggest attendances throughout the season and that brings its own pressures. "I read some comments from Darrell Clarke in the run-up to this game and he said how he needs his players to be mentally strong and deal with that pressure. "So tomorrow, that's something that we need to try and utilise in our favour. "There is definitely an optimism coming out of their club as they look towards the start of the new season. "So we need to be the party poopers, make it difficult for them on the pitch and ensure that it isn't nice viewing for their fans in the stands." 0 0Share 5Tweet 5Share Report this article Get Involved! We are going to be the team everyone will love to beat this season.
With the few injury/suspension problems that Grimsby have though, I think we will get the 3 points.
On a side note, when did we actually win on the opening day of the season?

On a side note, when did we actually win on the opening day of the season? I think that yourselves, Grimsby, Wrexham and Torquay are the teams that every club wants to beat this season. We made the mistake of thinking that we were a massive club that would steamroller the league in its first season, only to be disappointed and finish outside of the play-offs and we are still here. Anyone can beat anyone in this league as has been proven over the last few season. We have key suspensions (Pearson, Toto and Neilson) and injuries (Pittman, Arnold, Hannah) three of the missing players we didn't have last season. I am predicting a win for Grimsby, 3-1. With 500-600 Grimbarians making the trip. See you tomorrow.

They're not necessarily comparable scenarios. Once Scott and Hurst had settled in and bought in their own players they did much better - we're sort of at that stage now with Clarke. Nobody thinks we're going to 'steamroller the league' (if they do they're naive), and we know every game is going to be tough. It might take us a while to get back, every man and his dog has let us know that. However, the league is very wide open this year. I personally think we'll finish around 10th but if we play well and put in the effort and work rate, there's no reason why we can't at least flirt with the play-offs, maybe more.

I think we have learnt from our mistakes of being over confident, failure two years in a row at the play-off stage really hurts along with cup runs and losing finals. I think yourselves and us will both be up there come the end of the season, with Forest Green and Wrexham and one of another 4/5 teams. Tomorrow is about performance for me not as much the result.

If he gets back to the form he had when first playing for us, then he will be a 20-25 goal a season player, had been off the boil since leaving us though. I am not sure about Hannah, I think he will be in the squad.
