When you think that as the 1970's version of the Championship the football was awful.
I was there for that game and am sure our league 2 efforts this last season produced better football than that.

I've only been watching since 91 but I don't think we've ever played better all round football both defensive and attacking in my time watching us.

I would argue that footballers were technically better players back then. If you consider how bad the playing surfaces were generally 40+ years ago compared to today. And of course players with skill were kicked from pillar to post back then. It was pretty hard to play neat, intricate football on pitches resembling cabbage patches.

In fairness I have only watched the first 20 mins but....rovers played some lovely one touch football at times just their final pass or shot was lacking.Villa were very poor on the day. You do have to remember this game isn't preserved because it was a classic but purely because it was one HTC decided to show in full. It was nice to see tackling and a lack of handbags being thrown around in a hissy fit.....and no diving . It would be funny watching today's players using the balls from back then (or earlier balls) Not sure if I was there or not .....I remember having a big stack of programmes with the names Eadie (a fav of mine at the time) ,Aitken, bater, prince, taylor seemingly on the team sheet for each one.

What a difference in the penalty area when corners were taken,it's like watching wrestling these days compared to then. I was at the game in the Tote End

And much more than "Rovers". I also remember from that era one particular game which was a top of the table clash v Fulham. They brought a big following and a load of City fans joined us in the Tote End in a show of solidarity against the London boys and we were all chanting "Bristol United" Can you imagine such a thing happening today? Football has become a lot more polarised now. In the Villa match our fans were singing You'll never walk alone far more then Irene, which I only heard a couple of times. Back then it was common for crowds to chant the names of the big first division sides. It all seems very strange now.

Why is the effing date in American? It didn't come from there did it? This is one of my pet hates! Proud to be British!! That's probably a racist comment now. (Bangs head on table in sheer hurt and frustration)

I agree about the pitches being better now,I saw some of the Rovers v Saints cup game on Youtube a while back, how did Paul Randall stay on his feet and score ?..also the Ipswich cup game in the snow, that would surely be called off now ? not then though, orange ball and blue pitch markings and get on with it. Football was much more entertaining then and the atmosphere was better..mainly because there is no atmosphere now.

Is this the Southampton game you mean? Pitch invasion and baggy jeans? Terrible pitch there, but it was normal in January in those days.
