We didn't win our home game. A draw tomorrow = 2 points dropped over 2 games. That return will see us in trouble come the end of the season. Some people will be saying it's no big deal if we lose to Barnet in a minute! Okay, so take two points off the average of winning all home games and drawing all away games, I believe that's 90 points over the season. Would people take that? Starting the season with 2 points in the first 2 games of course isn't ideal, but it's not the end of the world against two decent sides in this league. It's just the first two games, the table or form guides aren't even worth looking at until the first month is out and I see no reason why we couldn't then go and beat Alty and Telford. This is all speculative of course, I want us to go for the win just saying I'd take the point if given it. Lets just say this for example, if we drew with Barnet, beat Alty & Telford, drew with FGR and then beat Halifax - an unbeaten first month of the season, 12 points from 18 would you be happy? I'd find that more than acceptable. It's all a pointless theory at this point in time but I'm just saying a point away against a good team isn't a bad result. Again Luton got 10 points in their first six: 2 wins, 4 draws - they won the league by a landslide. As for people saying no big deal if we lost, I never want to lose any game, in fact I want us to win every home game and every away game. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. So if we took a point for me, not a bad result. Losing is a bad result.

Got to go for 3 points simple as that. Would take a point if we came from behind after having a right go at them. Their win on sat was against Chester (relegated) with 10 men. We got to attack and notch some points. A tough away game but we have to start fronting up in this league or face humiliation. Goals Goals Goals should be our goal. UTG.

HJR. You put it very eloquently. Fair points but no. I would not take a point now and firmly believe that with the defence from last year plus DCs fav players from Salisbury, we should be aiming to win every game. I will allow an occasional slip up but we are the boys to beat in this league, the big dogs.

The one thing i'll say is by no means do I think we should be aiming for a point, we did that last season far too much and had a horrific away record, I definitely think we should aim to win the game and I'm sure that's what DC will be saying to the lads. I was just saying i'd take a point if it did come to it.

A point away wouldn't be the end of the world. The seasons 46 games long and two draws on our first two games against two of the most fancied teams would set us up nicely for the easier games to come. I hope and also don't think we'll sit back and play for a point but if you'd offered me 5 points from our first three games before Saturday I'd have taken that and I can see us being there come Saturday night.

Well the Hairy Beast says we're going into every game looking for 3pts so let's hope it works more often than not! I think the opening 2 fixtures may prove a blessing. Tougher games against fancied ex-league sides. Good performances and a couple of points should keep people reasonably happy as long as we 'gel' quickly and the points start rolling in soon after. Had we been given openers against alfreton and afc one man and his dog and lost and performed badly in both all hell would have broken loose!

Martin Allen's view......
“I went down to Bristol Rovers last Friday night to watch them play Coventry and they played very, very well. They played a good style of football which was very pleasing on the eye.
“With their amazing supporters and the backing of their fans, I am sure that come the end of the season they are going to be right up there in the mix.”
A good start would be three points to the gas....

Only winning games will guarantee us promotion. We have to shake off this loser's mentality at this club. I know it is early days, but we MUST keep in touch with the front runners. Remember, we have to finish in the top 5, something we have failed to do in many years.

I think there are two thoughts here:
1. Do you think we should play for a draw? 2. Would you be happy with a point after the game?
I think the original question was asking point 2 above. I doubt any fan would say yes to point 1.

I doubt any fan would say yes to point 1. The trouble is there are going to be a few sides on 6 points by 9.30pm tonight. If we draw, we will already be 4 points off the pace with another away fixture on Saturday. I get the feeling that if we are to win promotion, we have to make a flying start. 3 points tonight please.

It doesnt really matter what level of football you are in, but it always been the case that you win you home games and try not to lose the away ones. So i'll say that a point will be good, but a win would be even better. It up to the players to do their job and get the right result.

The only time I'll settle for a draw this season is on the final day ..... when we start the day 3 points clear at the top of the league.

And then we lose 1-0 at home to a side with nothing to play for, whilst the teams below us win and go above us on goal difference? Too soon? On a serious note, having seen highlights of Altrincham's game against Aldershot, their defending was poor to say the least. If we can pick up a point tonight, then I don't see it as the end of the world because both Alty and Telford, whilst tough prospects, should be winnable games. Obviously three points tonight would therefore put us in a very strong position.

I feel more confident of us picking up the 3 points tonight against a side like Barnet who are confident and almost certain to go on the attack rather than against a smaller team that will park the bus from the outset. That might be a historical hangup though as in the past we have found it hard to break down a defence and have generally found it easier when given a little space when our 'better' player can prosper.

Would I be happy with a point, no. Never happy with a point. Would I accept a point? Maybe.

I think it'd be an acceptable point, but we need to go for the 3 points. And I expect us to.
Gas-Ed was spot on about the 'losers mentality' at the club, we need to get rid of it. Starting to win games like tonight would be a stepping stone towards that.

That's fine but if you factor in the added incentive for altrincham , telford etc, to beat us because of who we are......those points won't be as easy as you may think. We are capable of and should be aiming to compete in and win each game. Why do people say "tough away game at blah"? Well with our home crowds shouldn't we be banking every home game? With our travelling support and 'competitive budget' shouldn't we be banking 3/4 of away games? Becoming terribly tired of the lack of ambition in our ranks and relieved that DC doesn't speak in this manner, yet.

As a fan I'd take a point right now. Playing away to a team that just won 5-0 away!
However, from a DC and the team's point of view they should be aiming for all 3 points. Like Sinclair said in his interview, we should aim for 3 points in every game we play this season. Without being big headed, we should not fear any team in this division.
