What do we need to be competitive? Does anyone think DC may regret saying that if we got promoted that all the squad would be offered new contracts because in my opinion there are a few now contracted that won't be up to league one standard. It's a funny situation as that reason could of had a lot to do with us gaining promotion but means we're now with inadequate players contracted. Puddy Mansell Lawrence Gosling Ollie clarke How do we know if they're inadequate if they haven't played at that level yet...? I swear half our fans go 'oh that was nice that a group of players got promoted twice in two years. Should we build on that group? Nah let's dismantle it!'

You can build on the squad by keeping the better players and then upgrading some, there is no place for sentiment if we are to continue being successful.

Puddy Mansell Lawrence Gosling Ollie clarke Those 5 players played a part in our promotion, possibly motivated by a contract offer. If we have to carry 5 "inadequate" players as a result then its totally worth it. I'd happily have 5 more players not good enough for the Championship this time next year too.

its almost certain than a few players were offered contracts who would not have been but for the promise made by our manager but im pretty certain it helped us get over the finishing line into league 1. for me puddy gosling and lawrence would have been released and if we struggle people will be quick to point the blame at dc because of this but i think it was an inspired motivational tool and great for maintaining our team spirit. lets see if lines and taylor stay and who else we can sign because we may well loan out some players anyway.

So you're privy to the details of those contracts? You're certain they don't contain get out clauses for the club if the player ain't up to it?

You can build on the squad by keeping the better players and then upgrading some, there is no place for sentiment if we are to continue being successful. It is the sentiment that drove the team spirit that got the team promoted twice ,without the team spirit you become like Plymouth did and fall when it's time to pull together. Giving everyone their chance and helping them find a good place for them to continue their career if they can't adapt to higher level is what keeps the spirit alive ...if you add the right new people the spirit thrives.

Just because players have signed contracts it doesn't mean they'll play in the 1st team if they are not up to Div 1 football? Promotion to Div 1 has probably brought in at least an extra £1m in turnover next season, so if we've wasted £100K or even £200K on unwanted players contracts it's still a good return, plus if they are not featuring in the 1st team they'll probably move on in January in any event.

Was the right thing to do and give out the contracts, that way when players who were not first choice came on and subs in last few matches they had an incentive to do well. They were in it as much as the established players and had as much resting on it. Hence Easter and Gosling helped create a few goals esp both played a part in the all-important final goal. And as Topper says if it appears they are not playing or are not up to it they can be loaned or let go. UTG!

Would like to see Ollie Mcburnie return, cannot see him getting any game time at Swansea, the kid has talent and think he could do well for us.

on the last post i tried to reply to the "get out clauses if the player wasnt up to it" but something went wrong. if there was such a thing as a get out clause because a player wasnt "up to it" then a contract would be totally worthless and as such no contract like this actually exists in my view

He seemed to enjoy it last season. Even if only on the bench he's involved in meaningful games in front of large crowds, not low key reserve games.

I think my point would be if players are not playing and are not likely to play then they could go out on loan or could move on voluntarily because they will want to play football and if they are not would want to move so they were playing. Or the club could pay up their contracts and in Jan it will only be 6 months they would have to find. Whatever, clubs do find a way of moving players on. UTG!

I don't think we really need to worry about a keeper right now.
Friendlies are about sanding off the rust and mistakes will usually stick out more from a goalkeeper.
I think Mildy will be fine to start with, he isn't gonna last forever but then goalkeepers seem to have a longer life-span on the pitch.

I'd like to see us sign; Goalkeeper Left sided utility defender (similar to Clarke) CM Striker Mildy did well at the end of last year but he's getting slower and I'd like to see us sign a younger goalkeeper as first choice. We cant expect Brown to go another whole season without injury so we could do with cover. Matty needs replacing and I'd also like to see us get a ball winning midfielder with league one experience. If DC does decide to go with Bodin up top, then a winger instead of a new striker on that list.

I think that everyone I know who goes to games wants to see a new goalkeeper.
