Cheers guys
My mate mentioned about the sh*t signing the Icelandic bloke for £3m and I said that was probably more than the combined total we had spent on every player we've ever bought, across the entire history of the club.
Looking at the above list, it's clear I had forgotten a shedload of players. I wouldn't have thought we've spent more than say £8m in total though and almost certainly less than £10m.
When you consider 82 Ltd have spent over £4.5m in the last few days (and Tomlin must have cost a fair bit) and it's easy to see why them lot are so bitter and twisted - they've spent tens of millions of pounds more than us in (hundreds?) and they are 1 division higher than us. That would certainly anger me if the boot were on the other foot!

Then again perhaps it shows the gulf between being competitive in Div 1 (fingers crossed for the season) and the Championship, Leeds who were only mid table last season have also been splashing the cash.

Yes you are right RD. But you can only ever have a limited number of teams who make the PL so no matter how much they spend only 3 can go up. It's a deluded poloicy that clubs are forced into if they want to go up. Yet nearly ever club in the Championship is a PL wannabe, understandably. But the finances needed to do that are enormous. Yes you get the occasional Bournemouth but not very often. So spending all that money by the other lot just to be one league above is pure gold and adding all the fees we've spent in 60s upwards that we've all forgotten will not reach what they've spent this week!

Carl Gilbert £18,000 was it from Rotherham......sure if wrong i will be told....UTG Rovers did a straight swap with Gillingham for Carl Gilbert, with Ken Ronaldson going the other way. We sold him to Rotherham for £18,000. A transfer that did not go down well with a lot of Rovers fans. Ken Ronaldson was a Scottish winger who was one of the most technically gifted players to have represented Rovers. However, he was far too injury prone, so we got by far the better of the swap deal. Here is an interesting article on Carl Gilbert from just last year. www.folkestoneherald.co.uk/heroic-action-saved-life-man-trouble/story-26488246-detail/story.htmlHe is still noticeable by his blond hair. Indeed, as Ronaldson was also blond, maybe the swap they were involved in was inspired by Bob Dylan

I think that some of the comments in this thread show just how important it is for the new owners to concentrate on building the infrastructure of the club rather than spending fortunes on the playing staff. Maybe it is possible to "buy" success on the pitch, but without the infrastructure to back it up there is no way that such success can be anything other than temporary.
We will grow and we will develop but I am more than happy for that to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Remind the prat that they are only one level above us, and we've got our best ever manager in charge to build our future, a new stadium and training ground coming and as much money as them. Pantsdown wrote off nearly £200 million to own a lower championship club in a rebuilt Lego ugly looking ground.... Mind the gap tho...

We were a cash rich club at the time. It was only a couple of seasons after 1989/90 where we banked around £2m for Martyn, Penrice and the LDV cup run. Shortly after we lost the planning permission application for Carsons Road so had money in the bank. I distinctly remember just before the three QPR players coming in chants of "spend the ****ing money" ringing round Twerton so I guess the board chose to spend to maintain Division Two status rather than keep for another ground attempt.

Sterling was a John Ward signing if I recall.

It actually shocks me that we paid money for Worrell Sterling, one of those frustrating players to watch. Seemed to now where the goal was, but rarely hit it. Some blasts from the past there for sure
