In my 28 years of watching.....
Martyn
V Jones Yates Elliott Alexander
Archer Waddock Holloway Mehew
D White Stewart
Might not be the most aesthetically pleasing team to watch, but I think it would do the best.

Not sure how people can name people like Elliot and Carayol in their teams and leave out current players like Lockyer who has probably done more for us than both of them.
I have only been watching since 2003 so here's mine:
Logan/ Andersen
Lescott/brown Lockyer Elliot smith Carayol lines Campbell haldane Taylor lambert
Subs
Mcrystal Agogo Disley Hefernan Walker
Wow naming midfield players was really difficult, we haven't really had any decent midfields since I've been watching. Most of all we haven't had any great wingers, Carayol is the only one I can remember!

How about a most expensive XI?
Gk
Ady Boothroyd £30,000 Steve Foster £150,000 Andy Tilson £370,000 Paul Hardyman £160,000
Worrel Sterling £140,000 Justin Skinner £130,000 Gary Waddock £100,000 Justin Channing £275,000
Jason Roberts £250,000 Micky Evans £250,000
Can anyone name a goalkeeper we spent good money on?

You sure about the Worrel Sterling and Jason Roberts figures? Can't verify Roberts other than through wiki, Sterling is right and confirmed by a quick check in Stephen Byrne and Antony Jay's history book. In doing so I see we signed Andy Collett for £100,000 so that answers my Gk question. I could move Channing to right back and bring in Stewart Barrowclough for £100,000. Plenty of strikers to choose from, Cureton and Lambert were apparently £200,000 signings but happy to be corrected.

Didn't we pay Palace for Parkin? I seem to remember we did pay for him? Could be totally wrong though.

Not officially as far as I recall, but I do remember a "value" of £100,000 being attributed to him as part of the exchange for Martyn.

Better looking team with Channing at RB and Barrowclough on the wing too! i always thought that given GK is such a pivotal position we seemed to object to paying for them!! if we were to draw up a table of positions versus how much we'd spent to get players to play in them the two strikers berths would win hands down even though as far as I can remember a striker has not been our record transfer fee paid since 1979! ...when at 100k Stewart Barrowclough the winger was signed, he was replaced by Skinner at 130k for a year who was then replaced by Tillson in 1992 at 375k

When inflation is accounted for I wonder if Barrowclough is still the highest fee we paid?
Edit: Just done a quick inflation calculator and £100,000 in 1979 is £497,000 today, £370,000 in 1992 is £713,000 today.

In my 28 years of watching, i'd go with:
Anderssen
Alexander Tillson Foster Armstrong
Holloway Astafjevs Shore
Roberts Lambert Hayles
Armstrong was on-loan from Forest for a couple of months around the mid-90's - he was absolutely brilliant for us. Think we wanted him, but Forest wanted £400k for him from memory... he didnt actually go on to ahave a great career, but for me, he was the best left back i've seen at Rovers.

My god did we really pay a combined half a million for Evans, Sterling and Hardyman?!!
