That is a joke penalty, the ref can't possibly have a clear view from his position and it was near enough a block challenge between Ellis and their player.Nice header by Hartley though.

I thought a referee had to be 100% certain? Now if that was Mark clattenburg he would never have given it!
A shocking decision but i`m sure it was really down to the 3.5.2 formation which just invited Southend to attack.

Crap refereeing for sure but on a positive Rovers thing what about the way we've got 4 players charging in all right underneath the corner kick !!! That's the way to attack a corner, if you've got an accurate taker then just get as many running in to the spot as possible. Southend players couldn't get near it. Gutted a crap ref has cost us again, the other other night I thought a lot of our support on here were a bit over the top about Bolton and were a bit short of praise for us we played well and were undone by some bad reffing and bad luck against a side who knew how to cheat a poor referee. No new signing yet but from what I've seen this squad is more than capable of holding its own in this division. 3 or 4 new signings before the end of August coming straight in to the first team might not be a good idea I feel. I'd like to see a tough commanding midfield general brought in to replace the brilliant but aging Mansel but I don't want to see our squad changed too much because it certainly isn't broke and it doesn't need fixing either. UTG

Terrible decision given by a blind side referee because the crowd shouted "hand ball".
Why can't football have camera's with an off pitch ref who can review appeals (limited to say 3 per match or half). Of course the football dinosaurs have claimed it's not possible and resisted any progress through the use of technology. It works in Rugby, Tennis, Cricket and many others, even in Taikwondo which is on the box atm.
Instead we have to live with appalling refereeing decisions which cost points and suspensions.

Regardless of the joke decision the cross seemed to be going nowhere as well, it's disappointing as it would have been a decent win. Perhaps we'll get our lucky break on Tuesday!

UTG Agree, think we outfootballed Bolton over the course of the game. Bolton looked one of those solid outfits who will grind out points during the season without looking amazing. A bit like Northampton last season really. We battered them 2nd half albeit the emphasis was on us. Midfield is definitely our weakness. Someone alongside Lines but also a ready amde replacement for Lines when he gets injured. A lb/utility player that can play LB and a keeper are probably 4 positions I would like us to stregthen.

I think the positive for me was Ellis having more self control now. He also won a lot in the air against Bolton. It's all good to see.

From where I was stood Ellis had his hands up in front of him and the ball hit them - if he had his arms dowm I would say no pem but you cant put your arms up and get away with it.
So I think the ref was right to give a pen.

Not quite sure how people can lambast this decision so much, the footage is hardly that conclusive. Unless of course you were sat in the Southend end and had a good view, in which case apols.

But the view was probably similar to the refs? Surely the law of the game is that the player must be seeking an unfair advantage, I can't see how that can be the case when the ball just hits a player's hand.

The ball was blasted at him from less than a yard. The rules state that handball is when a player deliberately uses their hands in order to gain an advantage.
