Not quite sure how people can lambast this decision so much, the footage is hardly that conclusive. Unless of course you were sat in the Southend end and had a good view, in which case apols. Because it's been established through interpretation and precedent over the last few years that balls blasted at you from less than a yard away are not now given as handballs, because they are unavoidable and can't possibly involve hand-to-ball movement. It's not strictly under the written rules (but then what is), but it is well-established interpretation. And refereeing is about consistency of interpretation.

Watching that has just confirmed my thoughts when at the game yesterday. Whilst the incident was at the other end of the ground so you have to trust the ref to get it right, I didn't see Ellis raise his arms so that was a crap decision. Did the Lino flag? DC was right to be furious. He usually accepts the refs decisions, not like twats like Parkinson on Weds, who was up and screaming at the officials, just like his cheating players.
I only hope this luck evens itself out over the season.

Another angle here, making it absolutely certain that the ref was a clueless tosspot.

Never a penalty but it's history now and we need to crack on. These things even themselves up by the end of the season.

Phil Brown believes referee Gavin Ward was well within his rights to give Southend United a penalty at Roots Hall this afternoon – and says Bristol Rovers opening goal should have been ruled out for a foul.
Rovers boss Darrell Clarke was left fuming after Ward offered Southend United the opportunity to cancel out Peter Hartley's opening goal when deciding that Ellis Harrison had handled the ball in the penalty area on 80 minutes.
Clarke labelled the decision as 'ridiculous' after Simon Cox stepped up to coolly despatch the spot-kick to offer Southend a share of the spoils, but Brown said: "It was a harsh penalty but it doesn't matter.
"Our players thought it was a definite penalty. The lad has put his hand up to block the ball and he's blocked it."
On Hartley's opening goal on the hour mark, Brown complained: "Adam Barrett's man (Hartley) scored but he is on the floor and I thought it was a foul."
Brown was more modest about the outcome of the game, when saying: "We could have lost it in the end.
"It was one-way traffic in the first 25 minutes, but after that it could have gone either way.
"When we went 1-0 down it was doom and gloom for some fans. If I make a mistake then come after me, but they need to stay behind the players."

Interesting that Orangey-Brown thinks that they should have had a foul for the Rovers goal. On the goal cam, it looks like Barrett realises he has got beaten, and then takes a dive with no one within two yards:

Just watch the Goal Cam here. You can clearly see Adam Barrett stumble to the ground after the Rovers' players have left him trailing in their wake. Gas score from a corner... woo-hoo... give Hartley a cigar!

You're saying they should have won one-nil coz of a ref's error, actually, we should have won one-nil coz of the ref's error. You're saying the ref added on too much time, actually he didn't add on enough time. You're saying Ronaldo dives too much, actually he just gets fouled too much. You're saying we get the benefit of the doubt from refs just coz we're Man U, actually refs pick on us coz we're Man U. etc

These two videos make Brown look a bigger idiot than I already thought he was!

God that's embarrassing Barrett - better hope Brown doesn't see that view or he will be talking to you on the pitch at half time next game lol

Another angle here, making it absolutely certain that the ref was a clueless tosspot. What was the Southend player doing just knocking the ball back into EH rather than crossing it, just trying to win a pen?

Bejaysus. That is never a penalty in a million years. Embarrassing decision as it's from point blank range and Ellis doesn't even move his hand, which is not held out to make him a bigger obstacle in any case. We were clearly robbed.

Also. Not one Saafend defender complains after our goal. Are you telling me they would just accept it if they thought there was a foul?
