Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke has today strengthened his backroom team with the appointment of former Torquay United boss Chris Hargreaves.
Chris takes on the newly created role of Under-21 coach and will monitor closely all players up to that age, which will see him work closely with Academy staff on the development of players for the future.
Darrell said of his new appointment; “I am delighted to welcome Chris to the club as we continue to strengthen our infrastructure.
“Moving forward, these are exciting times for our football club and although we only have seven players under the age of 21 in our current squad, it’s important that we develop our U-21 system to ensure that as many players as possible make it all the way through to our first team.
“Chris, who I know very well, will also be working with our first and second year pros out on the training ground and I’m sure that we will all benefit from having another experienced coach on our backroom team.”
44 year old Chris, who began his playing career with Grimsby Town back in 1989, went on to appear in well over 600 first team games, in all competitions, for 10 other clubs as a player.
He was appointed as manager of Torquay United, for whom he made over 100 appearances as a player, in January 2014 and left Plainmoor in June 2015.
Chris is the latest in a number of new recruits Darrell’s backroom team and we will be looking at the revamped medical and management team later this week.

This is a very good appointment, and further underlines Wael/Steve Hamers desire to improve the infrastructure of the club.

I wonder if this opens the door for Mansell and his career beyond his playing days?

Knew Hargreaves was doing a bit of scouting & coaching for us. Good to have him on board full time.
TBH, I didn't even know we had an U21 team? Thought it was U18's then if they got a contract they join up with the senior squad.

Another good recruitment and another sign that we're moving forward, if we're going to have an academy of the sort that we've been told then it's imperative that we have everything in place ready to go for when it opens.

A step towards hopefully becoming a level 2 academy.

He would also be a good replacement if any of our front line team move on.........

It's another good sign of the intent surrounding Rovers at the moment. Not only have the owners said the development of a youth system is important, they are also putting structures and coaches in place to do so. It's not just hot air, money is being spent in the right places IMO.. Hargreaves was at B'mouth before he took over at Torquay in a similar role and was well thought of. Because any benefits from a youth system takes a long time to show its good to see things being put in place now. Well done the club. UTG!

Is Alan Walsh still at the club or were the rumours about him leaving true? This seems a good appointment and I assume he'll take charge of the mid week reserve games, or will they still stay under MS' control?
Hopefully we'll finally get to see more players now making the jump from the Academy to the st team.

Excellent.
Massive squad, MT and DC on big wages, infrastructure being improved all the time etc. We may not have paid transfer fees over the summer, but they are spending money!

We also have improved gates; plus the money from the Chelsea game which I should imagine hadn't been budgeted for. Slowly but surely a structure is being built for the future. Good news.

He was sat with Wael and SH. Nice guy. As Henbury says, if we do it right we will also develop our own future managers as a result. Certainly MS and SY would not carry it off.

He was a good player at Torquay and from his time on the Bt sport team I got the opinion of a good character with a balanced outlook. Not big star but a good appointment in my opinion. I wish him good fortune in the role.

I've led a sheltered life, except for 5 days in a tent in Cornwall a few years back, can somebody tell me what a level 2 academy is and what it Means for us in the future.
