Time for a potentially controversial post but here it goes.
Now I really like Tom, he has been outstanding for the last 2/3 years and I feel is going to be a top centre back but to me he is struggling this season and could do with a spell out of the team. It looked like he was caught under the ball for yesterday's goal and he has made quite a few mistakes this year.
I think when Jake Clarke Salter arrives from Chelsea it would be good to give Tom a little break to regain his confidence.
I also think the captains armband is weighing him down, he doesn't strike me as somebody who will be comfortable shouting at somebody a lot older than him. Hartley or somebody with experience such as Mansell/Easter when they play should be captain to take even more pressure off Tom.
I don't want this to be seen as a dig at Tom because I really like him and players do go through inconsistent spells at his age!
I await the abuse!

on the player ratings thread He's showing as our second best player yesterday....
the lad's gonna be busier than ever this season as he plays against better quality, but he learns well from match time....
I say leave tommy alone....

I think eastongas needs a bit of time out of the team to regain his form. Mad comments from a mad man!

No abuse from me. This is spot on the money. He is struggling for form, and had a poor game yesterday. His distribution again left a lot to be desired.
Certainly, I would take the captaincy off him, and hope that will do the trick, but if not, then as you suggest a spell on the bench. Like you, I think he has a great future in font of him, but DC must do everything possible to reduce the pressure on him, and the captaincy is the best quick fix to start with.
One thing though. No way was he to blame for the goal. That was a complete fluke.

Just me who doesn't think Lockyer has done that bad this season? Certainly not a stand out underperformer.
'Taking pressure away' from a bloke who's played nearly 150 games for the club by throwing in a kid who's never played senior football before seems a bit strange too. Especially one who is coming back from injury.

Distribution has always been the weakest part of his game. I wasn`t there yesterday, but from the games I have seen, he looks as steady as ever at centre half. There`s half a team I would consider dropping, before I thought of Lockyer.

No abuse from me , but don't agree , sure everyone has a little wobble from time to time but Tom is quality and is only going to get better, like someone on here previously said not sure it would be a good idea to drop Tom and replace him with salter that could have the total opposite effect.

No doubt he's made a slow start, he'll be back to his best soon I'm sure.

Wait a cotton picking minute. Is somebody seriously suggesting dropping Undroppable Tom? What a crazy idea. Everybody on here knows that his passing is absoluetly shocking (and contrary to anybodys views, it hasnt improved), but his overall contribution is good.

Lack of clean sheets is a worry but we're not shipping in goals. Only 1-2 each game since the first.
Not sure this is down to Tom either particularly. No shockers, fairly consistent if not spectacular. Distribution has been woeful but that's not a reason to drop him, it's not like Hartley McChrystal or J Clarke distributions are significantly better.
Given time Locks will be a top class centre back in this league or the one above and I'm not sure dropping him would help.
Looking back at the last 4 goals conceded in the past 8 days, 2 were after Taylor gave the ball away, one was a sloppy Boateng and one a fluke cross.

Tom doesn't need the added armband pressure I'd agree with that and he could do with a midfielder offering him the simple passing option (as Mansell often does when he's fit) so that he stops coming out of his distribution comfort zone but he is still our coolest defender under pressure and our best anticipator of danger...as he proved yesterday - so still the first name on the teamsheet for me. Additionally he's had to adjust to a new keeper and one centre half partner and will no doubt have to also get to understand how to work another one when Chelsea deem their young lad is fit enough to face the rigours of L1. The more he plays with Roos, Hartley and/or Clarke-Salter the better the understanding will be.

The more he plays with Roos, Hartley and/or Clarke-Salter the better the understanding will be. I agree with this completely but would also add that, on top of the changes in personnel, he has also had to cope with a number of new and different formations at a time when we are also adapting to a higher level of opposition. This isn't a dig at DC but, when we play a different formation every week, the people that have to adapt the most are the centre backs. It is very difficult to achieve any consistency under that sort of pressure.
I also agree with the comments about the Captaincy. I am not sure that he will ever be a particularly vocal player and I am not sure that, at the moment, he is a natural leader. Again, it is added pressure. Having said that, the only natural replacement as captain, at the moment, would probably be Hartley - and I wouldn't be sure about him either.

Tom hasn't been at his best, but then again we're one division higher than last season. He still reads the game well and wins more than his fair share in the air. His distribution is inconsistent, but I wouldn't like to inhibit him. He's a good learner with a great attitude (and a very 'sensible' haircut!). I'd give the captaincy to someone else, give him a regular partner at CB, and let him continue developing.

I think Lockyers distribution is passable.
I've been more dissapointed in Hartleys distribution. Maccas hasn't been great.
It's certainly the area in defense that we most struggle with. Even the full backs have been weaker in position. I feel mansell back would help, he comes showing a bit more and fills the defense well.
