Well it seems that the annual golf day that was held yesterday at Farrington Golf Club was a huge success. The winners of the days events were Bristol Irish Golf society, captained by George Blackburn, accompanied by David 'Boris" Mehew. George Who?? I can hear you all say. So here is just an insight into someone I have known for quite a few years.
Before taking up golf, George was a very respectable athletics coach with Westbury Harriers. During his time as coach, he set up a very successful group of runners based in Bedminster. Many of this group went on to help Westbury Harriers one of the top Cross Country and Road teams in the UK in the late 1980's to early 1990's. They won many team UK team titles, and all credit was due to George. Since I've known George, despite being from Ireland and living the other side of the Avon, George has always been a Gashead. By coincidence, I bumped into George only last Friday and he said he was looking forward to Monday.
So...Well done George and the Bristol Irish Golf Society.

I knew him as a runner. Didn't know he was a golfer, though.

Played in the event yesterday, it was very good which was helped by the weather. Plenty of players there, Matt taylor, Chris Lines, Ollie Clarke, Rory, Liam Lawrence, Roos, The Beard to name a few, also some legends including Boris, Pete Aiken, And Tom Stanton and of course Darrell and the Chairman. Very well run by the back room staff. Looking to maybe winning next year

Was very lucky to have played in the golf day on Monday at Farrigton Park and had the pleasure of DC's company for the day. I really cannot speak highly enough of the guy,he was happy to chat about everything and anything, not all Rovers related and was a pleasure to be with. He's definitely in this for the long haul and spoke very highly of the current squad of players and his back room staff, although he did say his philosophy is that football can be a fickle industry and that he believed any manager is only ever five games away from the sack. He has a great relationship with his players and seems very excited about the way things are progressing on and off the pitch. All in all a fantastic day & I get the feeling something very special is happening at our great Club. Btw.....for all his good points, he's an absolutely sh** golfer..! UTG
