as a young boy i watched bill dodgins amazing attacking football teams with 2 fast wingers and an all out attacking approach. remember those near miss promotion seasons and fantastic cup runs? i do a good friend of mine and ex rovers player dave stone told me what a great coach dodgin was and how he used to say " meet the ball" always meet the ball don megson said when he arrived as player coach how he loved dodgin but felt maybe we should defend a bit more??? dave stone played about a 150 gsames for rovers and managed with good results in the western league at weston-s-m and portway-bristol and always followed the dodgin philosophy with his semi-pro teams any other memories of bill?

I remember being at Villa Park for a replay and him getting an amazing ovation from us has he walked to the dug out, always remembered that and of course Dick sheppard making a spectacular diving save in the last minutes only to spill the ball and concede was heartbroken !
He always used to say the best form of defence is attack

Bill Dodgin was a great man and manager. He took over when Fred Ford went to Swindon and what a great 3 years we had. Ups and downs but mainly ups. We had just signed a few good players, and expectations were high. In his seasons we had two great League Cup runs and those matches with the Villa, lost to Hayes in the FA Cup and were fighting for promotion. Great times and as has been said always attacking. Probably my all time favourite manager. In those years his son another Bill was manager at Fulham and we had a few matches dad v son. Great years, thanks for post. We really should have gone up in those years. One early January we were 4 points clear at the top, 2 points for a win those days, and were playing really well when we lost at Eastville to 2nd placed Villa and I don't think we won again at home until April! Good job there wasn't a forum in those days, just the good old Evening Post!

It was a beauty, right into the top corner. A candidate for goal of the season!

I remember Dave Stone well. A very underrated player. A stylish midfielder and also a good centre back. Was one of my favorite players as a boy. I posted him my autograph book which was pictures of all of the team and he got the players to sign their photographs. Please let him know that he is still fondly remembered. I still have the autograph book must be about 50 years old.

I don't remember him but my wife does. She used to catch the same bus as him. He was a lovely character, always happy & lively. He used to tell her, if the team weren't doing too well,"tell your husband not to worry - the players don't! ". If he was late the bus would wait for him. Sad he didn't get promotion - he deserved to.

I rember Dave Stone - a good 'utility' player who was probably not quick enough as a midfielder and too nice to be bruising centre-half. Also filled in at right back in the 1964-65 team that, barring injuries to key players, would have been promoted at the expense of 'that other team'!

Yes. we lost Alfie Biggs and Ian Hamilton, our top scorers to knee injuries that cost us promotion 1964/65.

Regular team (for those of a certain age) would have been - Hall, Hillard, Jones (G), Oldfield, Davis, Mabbutt, Jarman, Brown, Biggs, Hamilton, Jones (R). There's probably about seven Bristolians in that side. I remember a turning point in the season, away at Ashton Gate, Bobby Jones breaking through the Ted's defence bearing down on goal, only to be rugby tackled by a desperate Jack Connor - no red cards in those days - lost 1-2. I think that result knocked the stuffing out of us!
