Apparently, there is a large local fireworks display in the early evening and the police cannot cope with both events at near enough the same time. Mind you these days you are lucky if you ever see a policeman( or maybe not if you've been naughty)

This has got to be one of the craziest reasons for changing our kick off time as just how many police will be needed at Crawley for the football match and then to patrol a fireworks display later in the evening? One van load for the latter?

Lewes bonfire. When we moved from Bristol to Newhaven in Sussex the size of bonfire celebrations took us by surprise. Each little town and village seems to have at least one Bonfire Society, each with its own theme. They dress up in that theme for charity and from October through to Bonfire night they parade with burning torches through each others town. In Newhaven the parade was over 3000 strong. They all come together in Lewes, which has about 6 societies of its own. The Parade will be about 10000 torches strong. The whole town in closed off. They roll barrels of burning tar down the high street. Then each society splits off for its own huge bonfire in their part of town. Thousands upon thousands of the public attend. It takes hundreds of police to control the event. Seriously, it's bloody huge!

Don't they burn effigies of the pope, or is that somewhere else?

Don't they burn effigies of the pope, or is that somewhere else? The 'main' lewes bonfire societies have tableau involving effigies of well known public figures. I'm going to guess this year they will include Trump, and Tusk, the European president etc. The Cliffe bonfire society (who roll the burning tar barrels) burn an effigy of 'A' Pope, not 'the' Pope. It's the one from the time of Mary Tudor, in memory of the Protestant Martyrs who were burned at a site at the top of Lewes High Street.

Every couple of years the Catholic church tries to stop it and the argument is always it's not against the Catholic church of today. A few years ago another society used a tableau of a caravan with a family at the window that they burned. The number plate was P1KEY. The case a them them racially aggravated abuse was thrown out
