I can remember a great free-kick routine where all the big men would line up on one side of the penalty area but whoever took the kick would chip it to the opposite side where Ray Mabbutt would (at 5ft 6) outjump his marker and plant it past the keeper. Happy days.

R.I.P Ray. One of my early Rovers heroes. Very versatile midfielder who could slot in anywhere.
Played in attack at one stage and scored a hat-trick, away at Northampton in a 5-4 win if I remember correctly.
Had the pleasure of meeting him and shaking his hand a few years ago. As others have said, a true gentleman.

Very sad news. I had hoped it was a mistake when the news broke yesterday. I remember Ray playing towards the end of his career and his remarkable hat-trick at Northampton Town. A true Rovers stalwart who would always leave everything on the field.

Met him at the Geoff Bradford book signing a few years ago along with several of the late Geoffs team mates. Had a quick chat with him when he signed my copy. As has been said by many posters a great fans favourite and Mr Dependable, probably our most consistent player for many years and for a small man possessed an outstanding long throw in. Without doubt a Gas Legend!

Ray Mabbutt timed his tackling to perfection and could out jump almost anyone, very reliable and could play most positions including Goalkeeper.

Happy days. I always remember that working perfectly against Coventry away the day after President Kennedy was assassinated. Ray was a perfect professional and a shining example to Gary and Kevin. R I P Ray my condolences to family and friends.

RIP to a true Legend- was in the first Rovers team I watched and quite a few of them are in Gas heaven now. You are up there with some really great ones and can really hold your own. Condolences to all your family and friends.

My dad's favourite player, and one of my first Rovers memories. That team: Hall, Hillard, Jones G, Oldfield, Davis, Mabbutt, Jarman, Brown, Biggs, Hamilton, Jones R. I think that's right. Ray was so good, if he was playing now I reckon he'd be playing in the premier league (loyalty to the Rovers notwithstanding). RIP Ray Mabbutt

New poster to the forum and yes you were right with the lineup. I started supporting the gas in the early sixties and as most posters have stated Ray was a true gent and was a superb player. R.I.P. Ray.

A true rovers legend. I saw Ray play many times and remember the match in '66 at Eastville against Middlesbrough when Bernard Hall was sadly injured in a collision with John O'Rourke. No hesitation Ray went in goal, all for the cause. RIP Ray.
