But why is DC's budget so restricted when attendances are top 7 but the budget according to DC yesterday is only top 16, and a chunk of that was only spent on loan players after the Chelsea game windfall? www.footballwebpages.co.uk/leagueone/attendancesMaybe we're spending money improving the backroom team and infrastructure? I thought we were just lagging behind the top Div 1 sides on that score so won't they be already spending money on those anyway and we're simply playing catch up? Although there's little point in a Div 1 backroom team etc if we're back in Div 2!

1) Taylor was plucked from FGR's bench and Sinclair had played at National League level for one season before we signed him. Hardly what I'd call 'proven at that level' and they have turned out to be two of the best signings we have made (value for money wise) in a long, long time. Torquay fans laughed when we signed Mansell and said his legs had gone - captained us to two promotions. Let's not sit here and pretend that we signed big name Conference players who had been doing it at that level for years, because we didn't. 2) It's proved more of a challenge for him to sign players to improve us in League One because a lot of our budget for this season was taken up by promising all of last season's squad renewed contracts if we went up. It was a wise move to get us over the line last year, but it's definitely hindered DC's ability to make L1-ready additions IMO. 3) Don't agree our signings since promotion from the Conference have been mostly miss. We didn't recruit well this summer (largely due to budget IMO), but what about the likes of Bodin (signed after a trial and ended up being a massive part of our promotion), Gaffney (Cambridge reject who almost single handedly won us 9-12 points while on loan alone), Montano etc? Sinclair had been with DC at Salisbury so he knew exactly what he was getting. MT was being wasted at FGR, when he went to Chester on loan he scored something last me 7 in 8 games. He went back to FGR and sat on the bench. For whatever reason he didn't suit the manager, Pennock I believe. Used properly Taylor wasn't much of a risk in the Conference. DC isn't infallible when it comes to transfers. For every Mansell there is a Lawrence, Gafney a Blisset Taylor a White. Like I say, I want DC to suceed. I think the coming transfer window will show us what he's mad of. Some signings will be subjective, and I struggle to call many of his signing's 'misses' because almost all of them contributed to 1 or 2 promotions. A quick list of the top of my head would show the following: Hit: Taylor, Leadbitter, Mansell, Sinclair, Lines, Monkhouse, Gaffney, J Clarke, Montano, Bodin, JCS pre injury, colkett. On the fence/did a job/unproven thus far: Dawson, Balanta (scored a pen!), Della-Verde, Easter, Hartley, Puddy, Moore, Roberts, Boateng. Miss: Roos (so far, there is still time), Lawrence, White, there was another keeper or two and wingers (man City loanee anyone?), McBurnie, Cunningham (?), Blissett (only cos we paid a fee which was a misjudgement). Struggling for anymore and as I said some are subjective but i think the above is there or there abouts. OK you could argue the likes of Roberts Boateng etc are misses as they haven't been able to break into the team and that must say something, but they have all shown glimpses of potential this season.

You're right though, it is a big window coming up.

Love how posters on here are now saying how bad the majority of our squad is yet if we win on Saturday and results go our way we could be in the playoffs !!!! Yes we've been sh**e for a few games and we are certainly enduring a sticky patch which does warrant us as fans to get irritated and frustrated but posts suggesting that lines , brown , leadbitter and Lockyer arent up to league one standard is well wide of the mark and quite frankly embarrassing! Not so long ago fans were saying how this was the best squad we've ever had !!!! Totally agree. The four players you've mentioned are the four that don't suit narrow formations. Lines needs wingers to hit , brown and leads aren't wingers and Lockyer works better alongside an experienced centre half not as part of some god forsaken five man defence .! We've got a great squad of players that are in dis- array due to constant formation changes. I have got faith in Clarke to get it right though the blokes been top class for us and says he knows where he needs to strengthen , I hope that means his tactics as well as his personnel.

So we're getting a dose of reality...at least we're getting it in L1 and not in the conference! In our rapid rise up the league ladder it has not all been plain sailing. We had sticky patches in the vanarama and we couldn't buy a home win at the beginning of last season. This is another dose of that on the generally upward path, ride it out, come back stronger.

We were utter sh1te today, as a collective. Amateur defending. This is going to be D C's acid test. Will he be able to sign the players needed? His record with the likes of Blisset, James, Roos, Hartley et al make me wonder. ? Blissst scored goals in the conference, James barely gets game time to judge but he looks decent when he plays, Roos has made mistakes but is not as bad as people make out and Hartley is an improvement on Parkes

One thing I will add is that it may well be possible we need to replace a few of our heroic promotion defenders. HOWEVER - we do not need to 'bin them'. Leads, Brown, Lockyer are all a good age and have so much time for development. A spell on the bench of any of them is by no means the last we will see of them!
