Im bringing my 8 year old grandson to his first Rovers match and need to find somewhere to get a drink and food before the match. Are there any child friendly pubs/cafes near the ground?

Drink & food you could try the Annexe at the Sportsman on Nevil Rd. Drawback it is a little walk to ground but they allow kids in the conservatory and they will have football on TV etc and the food is good.

I quite often see very young kids in the Royal Oak.
Younger than than 8 Y/O's.
Since it was taken over they have tried to make it family friendly.
First no football fans, now its no away fans.

TIN HAT ON Ikea give an hours play for free, and have a cheap and sometimes awful restaurant.

Boston tea party just down from the anchor pub is swarming with kids (and hipsters). Also st peters hospice cafe is near there too, always seems relatively quite.
If I was 8 I'd want to be in the Thatchers bar though, always a good atmosphere and you might get a seat if early enough.

Yep, Boston Tea Party on end of Nevill Road is decent, but about a 15 min walk, although you will struggle to park much nearer unless you are really early I guess. My kids (when a bit older) loved a trip to the chippy on the way to the game so Bristol Fryer opposite the Queen Vic is a good option if he's happy to eat battered sausage and chips standing up. That will be more memorable for him than a cafe though I reckon!

You don't get a receipt, or anything, so when they call out sausage & chips(Yep that's me!!) take it and walk off. Not that I condone people doing this mind.......

The Welly has a playground in the beer garden.
In the near future the pub previously known as the Duke of York will be reopened and family friendly.
All your Grounded's, Tinto Lounge's, Boston Tea's etc. are decent shouts even if they aren't pubs in the strictest sense.
The Gloucester Old Spot on Kellaway Avenue is hugely family friendly, but it's a bit far away so only worth it if it's already on your way.

You will not have any problem at the Wellington, always plenty of tables in the back restaurant area and no problem for kids anywhere in the pub.

The Royal Oak is child friendly and has a nice beer garden and play area if the weather is ok. Good food, beer and coffee. If you prefer dish water instead of proper beer try the Wellington.

The original poster has already confirmed what I know, that the beer in the Wellie is good. We both along with hundreds of others every matchday obviously prefer dishwater rather than the good beer available in the Royal Oak.

Don't take your kids to the pub. Pubs are places to go to get away from the little darlings.

Just leave the kid in the car - bottle of coke and a packet of smokey bacon. My old man used to say "I can have a proper drink , without the little b@stard getting under my feet."

This is the best shout for what you are looking for. Tinto Lounge Cafe Bar on Gloucester Rd, children always very welcome, chilled and no idiots to be seen.

These lounge cafe bars really disappoint me. From the outside they look really promising. Chilled and quirky layout but the food leaves a lot to be desired IMO especially for what you pay. Shame.
