Bit late to get a replacement if he does leave. Ready-made excuse though isn't it! Now that would be the nightmare senario...MT leaves on deadline day and no time to sign a replacement....it's not going to happen, is it?

I'm going to put myself in his shoes now. I've scored a boat load of goals for you and could have walked away for nothing in the summer. I'll stay on and if I keep scoring that'll put you into mid table safety and puts me in shop window. I don't think a low release clause is an unreasonable request. You get a good start in exchange for letting me go as I need to further my career, I won't be young forever

Of he does go, we won't get told for how much anyway Quite right, why would the board want to spoil our opportunity for a 400 page thread on this forum.... I was told it was 300k ..... SH told me it was £5m........ His neighbour told me it was £10m...... His girlfriend said it was £20m, as there was a clause, based on the size of his k**b

If his release clause is only £300k then the person that agreed to it needs to be shot!
MT was worth at least that after his conference season, then after last year's performance - even tho he was out of contract during the summer, for it to be put in as low as £300k would be maddness just to get the player to resign.
Can't see it being that low as otherwise someone would had took a punt on him already.

Assuming Hamer told the truth he said on Saturday nobody had so far shown any interest in signing him,if he was that much in demand surely somebody would have approached Rovers to discuss his supposed "release" clause with just a week to do to deadline day?

Still think we should get James Vaughn from bury,16 goals in a poor bury team And he's only 28 I thought he was in his 30s seems like about 15 yrs ago he was at Everton Was Everton's youngest ever scorer or even player at 16 or 17. Younger than Rooney I think.

Which who knows could be healthy in the long run as it feels too cozy at the moment. If he does go I have no confidence whatsoever that we will bring in a replacement .... pick an excuse from Too late, Too expensive, wait for the summer !! They are out there, James Vaughan, Lyle Taylor , Omar Bogle, Charlie Wyke Is Ollie Watkins even a converted Striker maybe-but no club in their right mind let's go a valued and decent striker in January unless its big money. I bloody hope he stays because something isn't feeling right for me at the Club at the moment .... lose your goal threat and dont replace him is Gross Negligence whatever the excuses and I predict we will fall down the League faster than that other lot South of the River. Frustrating that it's speculation with us again and Taylor whilst the lads at Scunthorpe remain untouched, Simon Cox is left alone and Billy Sharp stays loyal to the Blades. On a positive note I want the window closed asap and move on with the season , last week I was praying for an extension and some new faces. Could just be newspaper tripe and come Feb 1st MT is still leading the line.

If Matty goes for £300k and if the management fall out and if we don't bring in a replacement and if the owners make poor excuses for it and if things aren't right at the club and if we fall down the league and if the Mem collapses because of a hurricane in Horfield.......

Get the insurance company to rebuild it ... oh wait a minute!

I think the fact DC told Easter last week that his services are no longer required is an indication that MT won't be leaving (or if he is, there is a replacement lined up). Otherwise we would be left with Gaffney, James and Ellis up front, meaning James would have to start because Ellis and Gaffney just isn't a suitable partnership.
Just can't see it myself. UTG!

Here's my thoughts.
I suspect there could be a 'low' release clause but I would expect that it doesn't come into affect until the summer.
300k would surprise me. Roofe had just gone for several million and i be surprised if we agreed something that low.
Again, we were told that MT became the clubs highest ever paid player. Based on what I believe others have been paid I would expect him to be on minimum of 3.5k a week. We have been told he was given a two year deal. Thus the worth of the deal would be 3.5k x 52 x 2 = £364,000. It would be madness to have a release clause worth less than the value of the contract signed.
It would be affectively selling him for less than our basic valuation of hiim.

We've also not sent Lucas out on loan this time and James suddenly seems to be back in favour having not even made the squad before Christmas, although if MT left surely FFP would no longer be an issue? Pretty sure MT's was said to be one of the best and it was DC's who had the best contract offered, although we've no idea what Lambert was on to know what's better anyway, plus we don;t know if MT's was a 1, 2 or 3 year contract. it could just as easy be £3K x 52 weeks x 2 years giving more or less the rumoured £300K buy out clause, at the end of the day if MT said he'd join Oxford on a free if we asked for a bigger get out clause there's little the club could do, the blame goes back to NH not tying him down to contract earlier last season.

Contracts aren't worth much these days and havent been for a while. if a players head is turned he will want out and the club will let him as they don't want an unhappy player unsettling the dressing room. Remember when Mustapha Carayol said the club were holding him prisoner? Made it all public on Twitter then the club had no choice but to get what they could for him. Disgraceful way to treat the club, god knows why anyone wanted him back.
