SOUTHEND United manager, Phil Brown, was in a buoyant mood ahead of a massive week for his play-off chasing outfit.
Speaking ahead of the Blues Sky Bet League One trip to Bristol Rover, the first of three games in eight days, Brown said: “It’s the most important week of the season, along the lines of if we are we going to do anything this year we need to get a massive points return. A lot of people are saying what the points total will be and how many games we need to win from the last eleven, but there’s nothing better than winning your next game. That’s what we’ll be trying to do against Bristol Rovers.
“The jungle drums there are very aggressive. They are in the last chance saloon in the manager’s eyes in terms of they need to win this game. They’ll be going all guns blazing against us. If it becomes an open game, then hopefully the quality players that we’ve got will come to the party on Saturday.
“Drawing six out of seven is probably not the kind of form you want to be coming into, but undefeated in eight is a different way of putting it.”
The Blues chief continued: “I just know that it’s a fairly hostile atmosphere when you go there. They are well supported as a home team. The pitch is not really conducive to playing great football. The surface is not the best but it’s a big open space. Hopefully, the pace and the width that we’ll play against them on Saturday will cause them enough problems for us to win the game.
Brown spoke highly of his opposite number in the Bristol Rovers dugout, Darrell Clarke, adding” “He’s a feisty character, Darrell. He’d run through a brick wall as a player for the cause, he’s going to do that as a manager. He’s the kind of coach that will make changes and stand up for those changes because he has the changing room behind him.”
