Not strictly Rovers related so mods can move if they wish but I thought it might spark some debate as it could easily happen to one of our players in the heat of the moment.
It seems that a referee's cards get upset easily and don't like to be whacked any more than a player does. Newport's Mitchell Rose has received a 5 game ban for knocking a red card out of Trevor Kettle's hands. The FA deemed it as misconduct for f**k's sake.
"" Newport County midfielder Mitchell Rose has been handed a five-match ban after a charge of misconduct was upheld by the Football Association. Rose was charged for knocking a red card out of referee Trevor Kettle's hand in Newport's 3-2 loss at Cambridge United in February. The 22-year-old was initially sent off for giving away a late penalty, but the dismissal was overturned. Rose, the brother of Tottenham's Danny Rose, was also fined £1,000. County received a £2,500 fine after admitting a charge of failing to control their players. The matter was heard by an independent regulatory commission. ""
The World's gone mad. You can dive in with a two-footed tackle and almost end a player's career and get a 3 match ban. But if you hurt the feelings of a piece of coloured card you get a 5 match ban. Rose was reacting to what he felt was an unfair dismissal and he was proved right as the sending off was overturned. Without the trigger of the dismissal the swipe at the red card would never have happened. I could understand a ban if the player had punched the ref but knocking a piece of card to the ground beggars belief.
Discuss.

Surely his ban is actually for stupidity?

The punishment is for the aggression shown. Every player knows that it's a big 'no-no' to show any dissent or become physical with a referee. The player basically lost the plot and lost control. It's all about discipline. Even if the ref is wrong he is still right. That is the law of the game. They all know the laws and whether or not you agree or disagree with him that's just tough. Don't get me wrong, I get frustrated when I see some of the awful refereeing decisions at the Mem but there is nothing you can do. The player knocking the card out of the refs hand was never going to change the situation and I agree it was proved to be an incorrect decision but the player must learn to have control. Boring though it may be, Rugby refs have total power and the players respect them. That certainly isn't the case in football. Kerching! (that's the sound of me, putting my 10p's worth in!!)

The ref retired not long after that. I did read the other day that he regretted the send off and apologised to the club. It was definitely a penalty though. We were robbed.
