How has it got to the point where agents are paid by clubs? Surely they're employed by the player and the players should pay them?

I thought the agent takes a cut of the player's wages, paid to the agent by the player, and also a percentage or lump sum of any transfer fee, paid by the club of course.

Well done to the op for putting the list on here, very interesting. Im not a fan of agents but i understand why they are important to players to look after their interests and get them the best deal, lets face it premier league and championship players are like hollywood actors nowadays so they need agents.

Doesn't really mean anything without knowing what players are being paid.

For once I agree BB. You can bet your bottom dollar that anyone here would have one. Football used to be a game where average joes turned up and watched average joes play. The money was with the boards and owners, as it was everywhere. Football, if popular is a massively money rich game and there are few costs - wages mainly. We don't buy sand and turn it into cement - there are no "raw materials". Football is 99% profit if enough people turn up. So, a lot of people hate the idea of Rooney, Vardy et al being super rich - super rich is only for those born into families who could pay for an expensive education - lawyers, solicitors, artists, company directors. Oxbridge people. You'd be surprised how many agree with them and don't like the idea of little oiks having ferraris. The issue is that fans support clubs, not players and players have to negotiate with clubs. Most young men, especially as not generally educated in most cases, are not capable of negotiating contracts. The clubs would hold all the power of they didn't. Perhaps some stronger rules on agents are needed but as a concept I agree they are essential

Looking at the FGR figures - more money than sense springs to mind!
"Forest Green Rovers spent a staggering £174,613 on intermediary and agents' fees between February 2, 2016 and January 31, 2017.
The figure, published by the Football Association, is far more than the other 23 National League clubs put together (£96,449) and higher than all but five clubs in League One.
The second highest in the National League was Wrexham, who spent £26,032, with current leaders Lincoln City paying out £24,652."

Surely we have to approach a players agent and not the player if we are interested in signing him. Before this happens the players club must be asked for permission to speak to the said player via his agent if he has one. My first statement surely explains why we have to pay an agents fee? In the case of selling a player we would have no agents fee to pay.

Since snakegate Ive come to hate agents. This confirms my hate as they are pariahs to the game Worse than Estate Agents Agreed. All they do is take money out of the game and unsettle players to try and get them a move for their own personal gain. The game would be much better without them. I would love for agents to be banned completely but that would never happen. Their should be a maximum amount of money they can make per deal. What a waste of money

Most young men, especially as not generally educated in most cases, are not capable of negotiating contracts. The clubs would hold all the power of they didn't. Perhaps some stronger rules on agents are needed but as a concept I agree they are essential I just hate the greed in football. As much as I hate the snake for what he did, at the time I tried to see his side of it. The fact that he was being offered financial security for life is something that I think anybody would find hard to turn down in their place of work. What I hate is top level players who are getting paid ridiculous amounts and want more. The Ozil & Sanchez situation atm for example. They are both apparently on £140k per week currently, but they won't sign a new contract because arsenal aren't willing to meet their demands for £200k per week. I just can't help but think agents are to blame for this greed. Maybe if the agents weren't going to make £5m from the deal themselves then arsenal could afford to meet their wage demands. I understand what you're saying about having an expert as a middle man to do your negotiating. I just think that agents are one of the biggest reasons that football has taken a turn for the worst and become all about the personal financial gain.

Let's be honest, in an industry full of young kids, green, and with not a lot between the ears. Most are there for the taking. The agents are like sharks waiting for there meal.
