Attended last nights meeting at The Mem.
Around 30 Gasheads turned up to ascertain what support there was for setting up a BRFC section of this association.
The meeting was chaired by Steve Hamer, Dave Parker the health and safety man (?), members of the Playing Fields Association, and three members from the BRSC committee..
Firstly before anyone asks, there was NO discussion about UWE, training ground, DC or players. This meeting was solely to discuss the current situation at The Mem regarding facilities for disabled Gasheads, any reasonable changes that can take place at The Mem and what are disabled supporters needs at a new stadium. if and when it is built.
SH did say in a response that "when the new stadium is built, not IF a new stadium is built".
I believe that a DSA group will be set up, there are Gasheads who are prepared to be part of a Committee and the club are prepared to give it their backing.
If anyone is interested in joining, I suggest they contact Sam or Daryl Parker, sorry I do not have their contact details but am sure Clare in the office can get that info if you are interested.

Thanks for that info Severncider Are you able to give feedback regarding any discussions about how mental health disability might be supported? Don't we have a football team which includes those with mental health disabilities? I'm sure they played a game at half time a few months back and the teams included physically and mentally disabled players. Not sure what facilities a stadium should provide for those with mental health disabilities and no physical disabilities.

Thanks for that info Severncider Are you able to give feedback regarding any discussions about how mental health disability might be supported? That was discussed and will be considered when the Association is set up.
It is essential that anyone with an interest in any form of disability whether that is themselves or a relative that attends or intends attending matches comes forward with their input. Now is the time to get onboard, not at a later date.
I am not well versed in mental health disability but those who are need to have input into the formation of this group as in other areas of any form of disability.
I will endeavour to get contact details for Sam and Daryl Parsons, perhaps they are on this forum.

Excellent that the club is liaising in this way and that Steve Hamer was present. Well done to everyone involved.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated - I have found Sam's e-mail address. I was hoping to attend the meeting last night, but unfortunately the person who usually accompanies me was unable to make it.

I did make the point at the meeting that not everyone is on Facebook or Twitter, I keep banging on about this.
Every effort will be made to get info out about this group - the match day program, 20man, official BRFC and BRSC website were all mentioned.
The one thing that was pointed out was that any DSA must be a separate entity from BRSC or BRFC, they must be run independently with their own committee, constitution and finances.

One thing that is already in hand, but nothing to do with this meeting is that during the summer the carpark spaces are to be repainted(?) with numbers on, so anyone who has been allocated a carpark space will have to park in their allotted spot.
This seems to work at a lot of away grounds I have visited.

Discussion solely about the current situation at the Mem. I can't wait for Topper to tell us what this definitely means.
On a serious note thank you for raising awareness of this Severn.

That's a really good point, well made, about the publicity. I happened to pick it up through Level Playing Field a couple of months ago. I saw that BRSC had put info on their website recently, but am unaware of it being on the BRFC site.

I didn't mean that separate events should be organised for people with mental health disabilities, it's all about the matchday experience at The Mem, and helping everybody to access it. The Sensory Room at Sunderland looks brilliant, and I'd hope that this is something which can be incorporated into any new stadium plans which come to fruition. I guess that is something which this group would take forward when the time arises.

Clearly that is something for the future in a new stadium. There are Gasheads who have been allocated disabled spots in The Mem but cannot get an allocated parking space, due to the limited space available in the carpark. I would gladly pay £150 (£6.50 per match) for an allocated parking space, but am told there is a very long waiting list.
