Red: Shiraz (Syrah) - Aussie or French
White: Cabernet Sauvignon - Chilean (or the Co-Op has a really good Argentinian one on offer for less £5)

Funny how some say they prefer a full bodied red with a meal. Well IMO that depends what the meal is.
Get your matching right and there's a whole world of wine out there which would be perfect for any meal not just with roasted and grilled red meats.

Edit: he took redundancy in 2012 give him a google

Depends if with a meal or not.
With curry , An Alsace Gewurtztraminer
With roast, a decent Cabernet Sauvignon
My favourites include Barolo. Chateaux neuf ( 2001 Beaucastel)
Love a Jaffelin white burgundy if I can afford it.
I was lucky enough to drink many wines on company expenses that I otherwise would not have had. I enjoy the new world wines most but my favourite are the Chilean Reds and in particular a Santa Rita reserva.

I can tell you a story about Kava. A few years ago I went scuba diving to Vanuatu. While we were there we frequented a cafe owned by an Aussie woman. Her partner was an islander. On our last night there they took us to a place to drink Kava. It was a grass hut in the middle of nowhere. The only light there was an old hurricane lamp. So the only people there were me, my Aussie Mate, a Kiwi, the Aussie girl, and locals. They served up the Kava in half coconut shells. We had one, no effect, other than to numb your throat. Number two was served. No effect. At this point we were told we'd either get really talkative or very quiet. Not long after my Kiwi mate started raving on about how good our dive had been the day before. So we egged him on thinking it hilarious. He just kept on talking...... The Aussie bloke and I had another. The locals thought it brilliant we were there and that we'd had three. We felt fine. So we set off back to the hotel, stopping several times for Kiwi to be sick. We got back to the hotel, still feeling fine, to discover the restaurant had closed. So Kiwi went off to bed, while we hit the bar. We were told the next day by others that we looked like zombies. I remember buying the beer but if I drank it I do not know. Next thing I recall is being in my room driving the porcelain bus. I can tell you not only does Kava numb your throat when you drink it, it also numbs it when it comes back up. Next thing I know my Aussie mate is dragging me away from the bus. It was his turn to drive. Next morning..... We were leaving on a flight to the Soloman Islands. Gingerly walked down for breakfast. We ordered and waited. No breakfast. The mini bus came to pick us up. All we had for breakfast was a bottle of mineral water. I vaguely remember the flight and feeling like I wanted to die. NEVER DRINK KAVA.Apologies about the story. Carry on talking about wine.. It's banned in many health shops now. It is a sedative and has addictive qualities. I want some !

I've put Torrontes from Argentina on my shoppping list.
Is it true that the darker the grape, the bigger the headache/hangover?

I never used to like wine as a teenager - used to make me shicver after taking a sip (literally). But then on holiday with my partner a few weeks back, we ordered some Rose for the table - and I loved it. After that I started buying a bottle or two weekly for the weekends and only recently decided to try a White (last 6 months or so) - loved it and it's now my favourite type of wine if I had to pick. Not fond of red yet though! I can't say I know anything about wine - wouldn't be able to tell you what I was drinking unless you simply wanted to know whether it was White or Rose! It's certainly on my list of things to learn though as I really do love a nice bottle of wine these days. You do realise that to be an effective moderator, one has to have achieved a certain level of good taste. We probably do need, as members, to establish a "Fit & Proper Person Test" to ensure that any old riff raff do not find themselves innthe annointed position. The Welsh person being an example of clear and present danger. Meanwhile, the origins of Shiraz were in the Middle East, producd by a Jewish Community within an Islamic State. Bearing in mind I have on one or two occassions made love to a live bear, I'm guessing I may well fail the test. As such, I vote against this suggestion.

Think the club bars should have a happy hour on wines by the sound of this I'm in! Big red wine fan, any new world Merlot being my tipple. As for happy hour well, Tenants Extra please or early kick-offs it has to be Buckfast, but it could get messy, hic!

What a refreshing thread thank you Oldie.
First wine for me, and first step on the social climbing ladder, was a bottle of Blue Nun which washed down prawn cocktail, rump steak and black forest gateaux at one of Bristol's many Berni Inns in the 1970's.
I haven't progressed much since !
Like empirebaypete my wine usually comes in a cardboard box and the current favourite is "Black Box" 2012 Californian Merlot. Frankly the taste is good but the unique selling point for me, which differentiates this brand from the competition, is the tap which is so easy to use compared to others and in my experience never leaks. This is an excellent example of using a component of the package to help enhance product appeal and a very subtle marketing tool which seems highly effective judging by the way "Black Box" is dominating the liquor store shelves here.
Would have loved to see a really good and properly run wine bar included at the UWE Stadium where something special was/is needed to capture the imagination of potential customers and create the new revenue streams that were talked about. And within our stable of Gasheads we may well have had the perfect candidate to mastermind it.

AC Cahors for me - Malbec grape. Spent a couple of weeks in a Gite about 25km from the town, a few years ago. Gite had a small vineyard - grapes went to make the local VDQS which is also quite drinkable. For 15km is most directions there were vineyards and wineries making the local AC - absolute heaven!
Some good wine from the Argentine also, using the same grape variety.

Ok, so who's up for a FFS Wine and Cheese evening? Hic.
Tied in with a Cup cake competition for the kids, with the players all having to make a cup cake in the club kitchens.!
