I believe that someone has to have 10 years service or an injury to get a testimonial.
The next few players who could get to ten years ( or may have just got there)are probably; (years service guessed).
Lines - only Rovers player to win 3 promotions with the club. (2/3 youth team, released, back again via Filton College to have 4/5 mores seasons and now 3 more seasons under DC. Could we offer him another contract on reduced terms next year if he gets a guaranteed testimonial? (5000 people x £8 each tax free is not to be sniffed at)
Brown (7 seasons?) Or Ollie Clarke (8 pro plus youth team).
What about Stewy (3 youth team, 4 pro and now 4 coach/assistant.
Or even an unsung hero like Keith brookman?

I might sound a bit of a grump but I think testimonials are a left-over from the days when players earned much less in wages and they needed a nest-egg at the end of their careers to help them. So for me testimonials are unnecessary unless a career is ended early by injury or illness etc. Seems daft for fans to give money to someone who earns two or three times more than the average fan.

Dont the big name players at the big clubs just give all the money to charity when they have testimonials these days?

I hope so, it would be a disgrace if a player earning £100 k a week plus then wanted testimonial money as well. Still very few big name players stay at a club for 10 years these days ... In fairness, Rooney did raise £1.2 m for charity from his testimonial so fair play to him.

Testimonials are entirely appropriate still for players injured out of the game at a young age. For wizzened millionaires, no.

I think the days of fans having wip rounds for players are over . They earn more than enough to set themselves up after they retire.

Yes, Niall Quinn was the first player to do this, as he appreciated the fact that he had had a good career and didn't need the money. Some of his peers at that time were not happy with him for setting this precedent.

Despite the fact ones for "wizzened millionaires" often make millions for charities? That would be different. Nothing wrong with that either and I didn't mean to infer such, I meant for personal gain. We are getting in to semantics now as I am now questioning whether a testimonial is a testimonial if it's for charity? If it is, I suggest we merge the words charities and testimonial to explain this better. Only downside is that the new word is "Testies".

I seemed to understand where you were coming from; Chewey perhaps not so (still hungover from his birthday celebrations on Sunday?) but made a good point. The merged word will certainly attract the usual suspects; pnarr, pnarr

The only players who deserve help via testimonials are those from lower divisions who don't earn Megabucks and their careers are ended prematurely by injury.the problem is that the amount raised by these testimonials is quite small, usually under ten grand and the work involved in raising even that small amount is not in proportion to the amount raised
