Didn't see the debate as we were out for dinner. Certainly in our rural area Le Pen seems to be more favorable. Our main town voted Macron along with the commune I live in. However just about every commune locally voted Le Pen bar one who voted far left. Then again that was no surprise as the mayor is communist. Think I have previously stated my thoughts on the two. We don't get a vote here and if we did I wouldn't vote for either of them which you took me to town over saying I should vote for a party that I don't support just to prevent the other getting into power. This is the problem with the french presidential election system it comes down to a two horse race and millions of people are forced to vote for a party they would never have voted for. I would also say that locals here (Our french friends that cover the full spectrum from doctors to your farmer) are not happy with Macron and do believe the problem with Le Pen is the family name and what her father stood for. They also believe that she has softened in some of her beliefs and policies. Thanks for the reply France. on Le Pen having softened ….. of course she has as she’s astute enough to know this is how she’ll fool the gullible into voting for her. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. I understand to a point you or others not liking both candidates and not wanting to vote for either but that’s how a far right racist could end up in power. ps we pretty much have a two horse race and either party can get total power with only 35% of the votes. Hi Yatton. Apologies for not following up but I hope you and all your family are well following covid without any lingering problems. Whilst I agree to an extent what your saying about the UK election at least the population have the ability to vote for who they want to, whether that be right, left, centre or the Monster Raving Loony Party and all the others. Whereby in France it's two parties in the second round and that's it!

French election this weekend, head to head debate tonight. Interesting article puts Macron in the driving seat but nothing definite and could be closer than feared. The rise of the far right is shown in the maps, not good reading. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61166601Interesting to hear France’s opinion on this , I guess he would of tuned in ? Does he support the racist Putin apologist? 🤔 Didn't see the debate as we were out for dinner. Certainly in our rural area Le Pen seems to be more favorable. My God Grover you should have gone into politics and become PM it seems so easy now you've put it like that. Why didn't Blair listen to you when he started an illegal war based on lies. Anyway how the hell am I the ultimate hypocrite?. Yes I am an immigrant here in France the difference being I'm legally here. We have been here 15 years and regestered to pay our taxes within a month of arrival. We have our own property here and have both worked. We have not in 15 years claimed one euro in benefits and was not put up in 4* hotel at the tax payers expense. I'm all for immigration but come here legally, registered and checked. Not just rock up on a beach and run off. You keep pumping out the nonsense that all immigrants are put up in 4* hotels when you know that is a lie . The vast vast majority are put in budget accommodation. ps …. It is not illegal to claim asylum. The government has a duty to consider asylum claims and to either accept or reject them. The 1951 refugee convention is the key piece of international law that governs asylum seekers and refugees. Leaving the EU will not end our adherence to this convention, which has been ratified by 145 states around the world. International law does not stipulate that asylum can only be claimed in the first safe country a refugee arrives in Why do you and others here constantly miss quote me. I didn't say ALL immigrants have been housed in 4* hotels. Some have been housed initially in 3 and 4 star hotels before being moved to alternative accomodation. Again I did not say it is illegal to claim asylum. Of course people can claim asylum but go through the proper channels. Paying someone £1000s to risk your life by putting you in a dingy, cross the channel and then run off when you arrive is not the legal way of doing it.

If you believe William Hague would have said no to the USA on Iraq you're an absolute fool man. If you're not going to like the answer don't ask the question. Trouble is it wasn't William Hague saying yes to the USA it was Blair.

Ok watched it and some fair comments made. So I'll throw it back to you. How do you stop 28000 people who are not security and ID checked getting into rubber boats that are just inches above the sea and risking their lives to illegally enter Britain. What is the answer because if the UK government don't know as sure as eggs are eggs you won't know. Stop creating wars that lead to immigration. Stop creating a third world that cause immigration. Stop pollutiing the third world that is causing people to flee to Europe. Stop colonising the world that leads to immigration. But the UK can't stop doing these because they want the resources and money. You are the ultimate hypocrite, you fully support a system that has created mass immigration. If Ukrainians turned up on UK shores in dinghies you'd send them to Rwanda? Aren't you an immigrant yourself? My God Grover you should have gone into politics and become PM it seems so easy now you've put it like that. Why didn't Blair listen to you when he started an illegal war based on lies. And..... is that not one thing that the Tories implemented that people did benefit from. Or maybe they shouldn't have bothered and just let hundreds of thousands lose their jobs. So they didn't have a choice but to implement the scheme. Pretty much like the rest of the World. Hardly first class politics is it. So you are admitting people benefit from the furlough. Not like the rest of the world? my wife works for the education nationale (a government department) plus an adult education department and during lockdown and school closures she received the pricely sum of €0.00 per month.

If it stops people being people trafficked, paying £1000s to people traffickers, getting into small boats being over crowded and trying to cross one of the most dangerous waterways in the world and potentially drowning then that is a good thing. If it means the asylum seekers can be processed, ID and background checks made before they arrive and then travel to the UK in Safety then that must be a good thing too. Or perhaps you want it to continue with people dying in their attempt to get to the UK. If the squalid camps they live in along the french coast awaiting their turn to get into a dingy were no longer because they made their way to Rwanda to be processed and then legally travel to the UK it's win win situation. Why Rwanda I have no idea, it would make sense doing it at the first EU country border they come to, but that's an impossibility because of all the different routes into the EU. Plus also at the border I can see "what country are you heading to ?" ...."UK"...."OK go ahead". Perhaps you should watch this…… Ok watched it and some fair comments made. So I'll throw it back to you. You found one thing in twelve years? Do you think the list of failures would be longer or shorter than a list of one? I was just replying to Baggins who couldn't think of one thing.....so I gave him one thing.

I didn't say racist, you did. I said immigration. It's perfectly possible to be against immigration and not be racist, especially when considering white Eastern European migrants, who are often indistinguishable from the local population. To me, opposition to immigration is about being insular and....not nationalist necessarily....but wanting to go it alone in a world inevitably and inexorably globalising. The occasional but regular shouts of 'keep it British', or French, or American, as appropriate, are the last hurrahs of a shrinking and withering mindset. The Tories, alone amongst the serious parties, still trumpet this stuff, at least in public when an election is approaching. I don't think the sensible ones actually believe it, but they know their working class voter base do, so they say what they need to. I actually think a majority of people think like FG do that a vote Tory = capitalism and keep your money and a vote with Labour means giving your money to people to scam the benefits system. It’s an incredibly outdated and uneducated perspective of what a vote means. I was queuing for a sandwich the other day in some cafe and heard some construction workers talking politics behind me. The part that summed up the above is when one said, “economically I’m definitely right wing but generally I’m pretty liberal. Overall though I’ll probably still vote Tory” Again Gassy that is not what I said. I never used the word scam I said people who choose not to work because they will be worse off through the loss of benefits. There is a difference you know. Don't understand the "keep your money" comment , afterall doesn't everybody do that to an extent.

Maybe those working class people who vote Tory have morals. Perhaps they appreciate people should never be better off on benefits than those who go to work. (Of course there are exceptions). I and I'm sure many on here know people who choose not to work became they will lose benefits and be worse off! That can't be right. Why is it everyone who voted Tory is immediately classed as racist and in favour of brexit. I vote Tory and I bet everyone here has a higher monthly income than we have. And again, such an uneducated view on the subject. Pretty sure everyone here thinks the same. But if you want to keep believing the Sun headlines from 2002 then be my guest. Btw, even if it were true - Tories have been in power now for how long? If that scenario is true then your vote is wasted and you’re better off voting someone else. If you’re going to complain (which is a fair point) that everyone who voted Tory is a racist, you can’t then moan that anyone who doesn’t vote Tory is in favour of giving out benefits to those who don’t work. Can’t have it both ways. Uneducated! Thanks Gassy. I thought I had a good education thanks. I can hardly remember what I ate for dinner yesterday let alone newspaper headlines from 20 years ago. Your last paragraph is not what I said.

Tory, morals, same sentence, seriously. They've been in power for 12 years and I can't think of one way that's benefited either myself or the UK. Not one. Furlough scheme didn't benefit one person in the UK then??

Most of the poor pseudo middle class voted and continue to vote Tory, and as the Press is owned by the Tories what did you expect? I know lots of solid working class peoole who vote Tory. I'm sure we all do. Why they do it is at face value a mystery, because sure as hell the Tories will thank them for their vote but won't be planning on doing anything at all for them, unless it coincides with plans to make the rich richer. Actually there are one or two reasons why these ordinary people vote Tory. And we all know those reasons. Immigration and the very closely related Brexit, sadly. Maybe those working class people who vote Tory have morals. Perhaps they appreciate people should never be better off on benefits than those who go to work. (Of course there are exceptions). It is but we ( nato etc) won’t do anything . Our red lines are not really our red lines. If he's using chemical weapons then sorry, but NATO needs to flatten Russia. Send everything in, launch everything and destroy it. You can't say that Bags. I was ridiculed when I suggested such a thing.

That's my point, it's stolen. Looking at the contents of some of the lists Oldie posted, it's not essentials being shipped back. The charge sheet at the moment lists rape, looting, torture and extrajudicial execution. It's a war. (I assume war hasn't officially been declared on either side yet for obvious reasons) You frequent war forums and are somewhat a military nerd, so you fully know the consequences of it? It's not going to be like saving private Ryan is it... It's men at their utter worst. That goes for Ukraine and Russia. Soldiers looting is really well down the order of atrocities and makes people that bring it up as a stick to beat with look utterly ridiculous imo. You might think it looks utterly ridiculous but I bet to those who have lost their homes and possessions it doesn't. If it were so trivial why is it within the category of war crimes ??

Come on Yatton your being too stubborn now to admit that the Russian invasion has everything to do with it and you know it! Boris must be (and you know this too) the unluckiest PM in a generation. Comes into power December 2019 and within weeks is dealing with a Chinese instigated worldwide pandemic which over two years on is still ongoing. Now he is having to deal with the Russian invasion and the effects that is having across the globe. He is an brexiteer (although it was the UK electorate that voted for Brexit) he has had to deal with getting brexit done (afterall we live in a democracy so would be undemocratic not to). After 5 minutes of brexit your hailing it a failure ... do you give anything a chance in life before admitting failure. Tell me another PM in your life time that has had to deal with all that so soon after being elected. He has hardly had a chance to instigate things he promised in a manifesto...and I think you that too. If you want to blame someone for Brexit blame Cameron. He came back hailing a great new deal with the EU that was anything but. The OFBR say it will be a 4% hit on the economy, that’s more than the pandemic or covid or the war . your argument that it’s only 5yrs ( it’s 6) so we can’t call it out as a failure , is nonsensical. On that basis no one can ever call it a failure as it’s not had enough time, 10 years , 20, 50 or 100 ! 🙄 Good to hear you using the Trump line and the China flu rubbish. You do realise a pandemic can start anywhere and to blame a country is just bloody stupid don’t you ? All this “poor old Boris “ bullshit is exactly that. It’s the job , you deal with what comes your way . We’ve had the most deaths 170k plus in Europe . Our economy is on its knees , and we’re doing comparatively worse than other EU countries with trade. We had a great deal , the Brexit loons in the Tory party wouldn’t of been happy with what ever he came back with , and that’s a fact. There’s some loons on the left as well with unions like the RMT amongst others backing leave . Wonder how that’s worked out for their P&O members , with their better rights , job protections etc ? You just won’t hear a bad word said about your beloved Tory party and have you’re head stuck in the sand . UTG 😃 I didn't say 5yrs I said 5 minutes. Also it's actually 2 years since we officially left the EU. We (I may be wrong) were unable seal new trade agreements with countries until we had left the EU ( a rule implemented by.....the EU). Also take Romania and Bulgaria who have been members of the EU for "15" years and still have failed in their quest to join the eurozone and Schengen and their economies did not overnight rapidly increase so in your books it's a failure for them. I'm no supporter of Trump and not using his line. From the start I thought there's more to this pandemic than meets the eye. Must be coincidence that in the same city there's China's only biosafety level 4 lab producing the corona virus, China produces 83% of the world's PPE, has a population of 1.5billion yet has only recorded 156k infections and 4600 deaths, whose economy was booming whilst every economy across the globe was crashing. Is it any wonder scientists more intelligent than you and I still haven't ruled out a leak from the lab. Oh and Russia at 370k deaths has the highest in Europe. 3/4 of the Russian population live in Europe so breaking that figure down it's still higher than the UK. Plus there are many European countries with a higher number of deaths per million of population than the UK (but this has been covered under the covid thread). I am more than happy to hear criticism of the Tories and criticise them myself when justified. I just don't think blaming everything on brexit when Brexit has nothing to do with it really helps.

That is awful, I’m so sorry for your losses My god, I felt sick reading that post by gaslife. I do hope we get Putin. Can't believe I'm saying this but....I agree with you Oldie 🙂🙂 Problem is unless his generals and the public turn on Putin I can't see how he will ever face a war crimes trial. I echo everything that's been said gaslife. So pleased you and your partner are safe but sick to the stomach reading your post and watching the news daily.
